Trade talk - from September 2025 (Part 9)

Mitchell ringing Merrett to assure him of their interest rather than ringing Essendon with a better offer is another tactic to strong arm us to accept unders. They’re relying on Merrett continuing to demand a trade rather than enticing us with a big offer.

So many nuffies getting triggered by click bait. Wow.

Carlton and Melbourne getting an absolute kings ransom for Curnow and Petracca respectively. Amazing what happens when you deal with things with a level of maturity.

Yep the club could have been way maturer about this. The whole “we are Essendon!” act isn’t helpful.

I just don’t think they actually are.

The deals on the surface look good, but I’m not sure they are that amazing compared to what Hawks offer will be (I’m assuming) when you really look at them.

Absolutely.

Before all this blew up, three months ago, if you said we’d get that for a 30 yo Zach I’d have laughed and said it was overs. It’s only after the way this has played out that it feels like we should get more as unmotivated vendors.

Bang and stamp for more until the last minute, but if that’s all they get to, you’d sign on the line for that deal.

I see it as the opposite actually. For me it shows that they’re not pivoting (yet) to a DeGoey, Bailey Humphrey etc. are are fully committed to Zach. Whilst they’re putting junk trade offers out via media puppets, they would know in their heart of hearts there is zero chance we take unders.

I actually see that phone call as a bit of a ■■■■■ in their armour tbh.

There is literally zero historical precedent for a 30 year old being traded for two first rounders straight up.

he’s got some very decent VFL numbers

What are the chances of us getting any decent contribution from Zach to a finals push, let alone a flag tilt, in the next 2 years? Because he’s not re-signing in 2 years. And chances are he asks to go again in 12 mths and on that occasion we might get a single first round pick.

Now do one where our potential drafts picks from the Hawks are on the bottom of the ocean.

I don’t reckon that Curnow offer is that good. Florent has no currency at all, he’s being pushed out. Hayward’s a good player but probably worth a late first / early second on his own? Neither of the first round picks included are likely to be top 10 and they have to give back pick 22.

We wouldn’t take that deal for Merrett.

Disagree. The situations are very different and Sydney, Geelong, nor Gold Coast entered it with the intent to try rort Carlton, nor were they situations where the players asked for one club, and one club only.

Trac and Curnow openness to shopping around helps the return price. The clubs themselves being willing to make it work for a reasonable return from the outset helps the return price.

None of this exists in the Merrett situation.

Is there any evidence Hawthorn are trying to “rort us” or is this a made up Blitz narrative?

Iam more surprised he is being delisted most cats fans rate him and use the line hard as nuts which is a weird way to describe toughness

I think they are being reasonably fair if they are starting at two firsts

There was a long series of tweets and articles at the start of all this detailing that the Hawks believed pick 9 is the fair value and wouldn’t offer anything more. Came from Edmund, Morris, Ralph.

That’s your evidence? That’s negotiation 101
