Training - 27th Feb

I felt Langford only came good as a forward after his stint in the backline. When he was moved forward it was an unpopular decision because he’d been tried as a forward, and one of his strengths is his vision to open up the play.

So I’m hoping things might click for Lav as well as a forward. At least I feel like he’ll put up a contest.

Only took one game didn’t it, haha.

What would it take against Geelong to reset the mood on Blitz?.. I’d say minimum a win and no significant injuries.

Fair point. Also worth noting that Lav has generally improved as a footballer over the past 2 to 3 years. Can’t hurt to throw him forward, it’s hard to find a spot in the backline at the moment

As I said, they didn’t work on Forward Entry drills, or put any further focus on our defensive structures.

Interesting to see all of Hind, Menzie and Guelfi in red.

Who were the small forwards for the blacks?

Your dont think that could be included in “usual skills and match sim”?

That’s good news I was starting to worry on him

Jeez he really makes use of modified training to do fark all ha!

In the current preseason reports, I’ve not seen once a forward entry drill as being a focus. Certainly not mentioned in the skills sessions I’ve read (and I think I’ve read most pre-season reports by the excellent Blitzer’s here).

So when they say “usual skills” I’m not assuming they’re changing things up.

Defensive structures have been a focus, but not normally as a skills session. They may have done the whole “freeze - why are you running there” during the competitive hit-out, but it’s not mentioned like it was in other sessions.

yep chatting to a bombers supporter on the bike ride, he didn’t even watch the match (due to timeslot), but after the result concluded that it will be another mediocre year.

Interested in your thoughts.

When you read “Nothing specific they worked on, usual skills, match sim and contested marking and goal kicking”, what are you reading from this that makes you think it’s anything but a standard skills session and hit-out?

Do you think there were shortcomings from the Saint’s game that should have been a focus?

We’re going to win the flag.

Suck it.

I may have the timelines not quite right but I recall an Elim final (I think) in Perth where I thought Laverde (after continuous injury troubles) looked quite decent as a marking half forward. He then spent the next few years in defence as a badly undersized key defender, largely through sheer necessity because the list had clear holes in it.

He’s had a tough career due to multiple factors and I’m not sure we’ve ever seen his best purely as a footballer. He may still surprise.

What he doesn’t do is solve the main issue - pace at ground level in the forward fifty.

I agree, if Rath could help him with his goal kicking he would also add some mobility to our forward line, which lacks in defensive pressure. I’m talking in the sense of being a quicker, more aggressive tall than Jones, weid, seeing as our smalls on their own aren’t great at this.

Of course, sorry was referring to the next batch

I dont see why it shouldn’t be a standard skills session and hit out. The coaches have designed a program to teach the players how they want them to play, part of that is forward entries and defensive set ups which they have been implementing all pre season and I dont think they should change it up just because we lost a practice game. If they did change it up that would be more worrying because the implication could be that they arent confident in how they have been training the players all pre season.
