Training Monday 30/1/17

He lets the ball go with both hands as opposed to guiding it down with one from the vision I’ve seen.

As such margin for error increased and naturally going to duff more kicks, and if under any physical pressure even more so.

Be interesting to see if they can develop him to a point where his kicking is technically sound enough to cope at AFL level.

"... Dylan Clarke is big for a young kid. Kicking practice with one of the trainers after the main session. His kicking looks good but if I was a biomechanics specialist I would say there is a part of his ball drop that looks slow and leaves room for error...."

Not many Blitzers rate Clarke at this point, even though he was originally rated by some as a first round draft pick ( 12) on the basis of elite contested and clearance facets of his game and he was likened to a Luke Parker.

Its good to see the coaches putting time into his kicking . If his disposal can be improved he could be the steal of our draft selections at pick 63. I will be very interested to see his progress this year.

He is contested ball beast, i had him as my preference for a second rounder pre-draft and was extremely happy to get him (especially so cheaply)

Ironically he was 9th in the kicking test in the draft combine. So somehow his kicking seems to be effective, even if the style looks bad. ( maybe a bit like Conor in this regard )
One of the other attributes is elite 3 km endurance/ beep test. The guy is clearly a running machine as well as ball magnet.

I will stop pumping up his tyres for now.

I’m a fan and I think he will seriously surprise. We will have plenty of inside mid spots come up over the next two years and this kid could be a top level replacement ready to go.

I’m going early and saying he will tear the VFL apart in the first half of the year.

With a bit of luck he turns out like Dane Swan who was picked in the mid fifties. He was also a ball magnet but looked very ungainly and had an ordinary kicking technique. Most of his kicks went where he meant them to though despite his technique. Hopefully Clarke is similar

I'm in my mid fifties, so you're saying there's still a chance?

Depends. What’s your kicking action like?

The development coach's already told disco and Co pre-draft that they can do this

Only one way to find out, just nominate for the draft.
You don’t have an Indian parent by any chance? That would make things much easier

Kicking test not much of a guide as it is under no pressure at all and no fatigue so it’s easy to focus on kicking well even with a dodgy technique. When it gets found out is under match pressure where you have to execute the kick without thinking about it.

Or whilst being tackled like it seems a lot of his “Highlights” showed

For Clarke it will be about executing kicking under pressure and also maintaining an ability to get the ball to boot quickly at the elite level.

Good luck young man.

From a projected draft spot just outside the top 10, to pick 63, that is some sort of slide. l am not worried by this, l will back Disco to know what he is doing, and our development coaches to sort him out. One hidden gem being polished.

Who rated him at 12?
Apart from Fox, who have NFI and don’t count.

Champion Data had him ranked as 12th best . They had Kobe Mutch ranked 16th and Andrew McGrath ranked number 1. This is all stats driven though.

So Daniher was in full training?

I can't believe we didn't trade out pick 1 for 12 and 16. Instead we took the easy way out.

James Hird was pick 79. I'm a long way off that. Well, quite a long way. And I still have all my hair.

Champion Data downgrade players when their kicks result in turnovers. So there are 2 possibilities. His kicking looks bad, but is effective… or Champion Data dont keep a full set of stats in the TAC cup and dont take the kicking into account, if thats the case he rated pick 12 based mainly on contested possessions and clearances.
