Menzie is the small forward that kicks goals and Gresham is an upgrade on Guelfi. Iā€™m confident we are going to start with Gresham and Menzie as the two main small forwards, and the question is how many will we fit in the medium forwards (Langford, Stringer and Perkins) and mids (Hobbs, Caldwell, and Tsatas) in the forward line.

Personally, Iā€™d like to see Stringer play as a mid and rest forward when Langford goes off with Jones at CHF. Or Langford at FF, Wright CHF then we can fit both Stringer and Perkins and a second ruck without going too tall or heavy.

What about Corey Dellā€™Oā€™Lio?

Will Hams was more like 11 years ago though and I thought he was a midfielder

Jye Menzie looks like he could be the drummer for any Aussie pub rock band ever.

Guelfi isnā€™t that bad.

He isnā€™t a superstar but heā€™s got some useful attributes, and ones we generally lack.

Agree. He is tough and is a bit under rated.

I think thatā€™s what frustrates quite a few around here though

Some games, his pressure, intent to tackle and smothers are great to watch.

In a fair share of games last year, he was barely sighted however and consistently misread the fall of the ball inside 50. He wound up being a liability come the end of the year.

He may have been hampered by injury last year a bit i guess

Colyer wing/forward
Winderlich 2015
Stokes 2016
Kommer 2013-2016
Yestin Eades 2016-2017
Baguley spent a season or 2 as a small forward
Darcy Parish spent a couple of years there.
Jordan Houlahan - more of a marking forward
Lachie Johnson
Begley - more of a medium/fridge forward
Tom Hird - probably only spot he was a chance for given size

I donā€™t disagree; but, we have had a list full of these types for years and we continue to wonder why we canā€™t win a final.
Guelfi (& a few others) is not the answer, if we havenā€™t improved on him, we are going nowhere, whilst other clubs will be improving.

Well Iā€™m not bearish. I donā€™t expect him to be breaking into the best 22 next year if weā€™re mostly fit, but Iā€™m not as negative on him as some here. Iā€™d be hoping he continues to develop his game in the VFL.

A fit Guelf goes alright with the pressure and lock in style, although he doesnā€™t kick as many goals as you might like. Iā€™d be hopeful others would keep him out of the best 22, but I have no problem if he is best 22 on merit.

Good guess.

Guelfi is the exact type you want as depth. Able to dominate at vfl level and then come in to cover a role due to injury. Fairly flexible, highly motivated and fairly cheap.

Itā€™s perfectly fine to have depth players, most good teams have a roster that they can tap into. Our problem in 2023 wasnā€™t Guelfi, it was the lack of mature depth. We were forced to play kids before they were ready, which dragged the performance of the team down. Thatā€™s the reason we targeted so many mature players AND kept guys like Guelfi who are clearly pushed out of the best 22. And itā€™s why we cut injury prone depth players, if your role is depth and you canā€™t play, then youā€™re not providing value to the side.
