Training Sat 17th Feb - Family Day

Just got back, heading to Lorne so I’ll have to keep it brief. Nackers, CJohns and others will no doubt provide more comprehensive reports.

I’ll start with Goldy. Brilliant pickup, forget about his age he’s in great shape and the new rule allowing him to fend off tall leapy types like Bryan will benefit him. Be sure to tune in to Scooter’s lunchtime catchup podcast this week because he interviews Goldstein and discusses this. Goldy also covers lots of ground and gets all around the ground to help out.

I mentioned Durham, dynamic and effective in the midfield, watch this space.

Langers a standout up forward, unsurprisingly. Tsatas great in everything he does except, as usual, his kicking. One flying shot at goal was so bad it elicited a loud groan from the BB brains trust on the wing.

Martin was breathtaking with ball in hand. Slices through traffic like a hot knife through butter. If you had doubts about his move to halfback you can end them now. He’ll be awesome back there.

Nice to see Dyl Shiel participate in match sims, did some nice stuff, don’t forget about him. Sammy D also joined in match sim and looked pretty good, so that’s a massive plus.

What the hell does Hindy need to do to get a game. His preseason continues to be exceptional. Best 22 in my book. Hepp also very good.

McGrath very good down back. I don’t think there are any better one on one smalls in the comp.

Zerrett, Parish busy and damaging as expected.

Negatives, across the board I feel our hands should be cleaner. So important not to fumble under pressure. Needs more work. I also felt there was some sloppiness in disposal. Still kicking and handballing to players feet. Quite a few guilty

Not a great deal from Menzie who tried to set up plays up forward but they didn’t always come off. Alwyn D ok but not outstanding, Jayden was quiet.

I was happy with Nik Cox - looks to be getting his mojo back. Starting to show some of that rangy athleticism we saw in his debut season.

Non participants Caddy Reid Stringer Wright Kelly Tex Hunter Hobbs.

We’re in good shape. We’ll learn lots on Friday vs the Saints in a practice game. We’ll learn more vs the Hawks. But we’ll really find out where we’re at when we play the Swans.

EDIT: maybe Ridley did participate. Seem to recall him taking a couple of grabs.

I always pictured you as a smaller guy. In a sombrero. Thanks for the report!

Seems odd Stringer not involved today. Hopefully being managed. With him, not training naturally makes us ponder if anything’s troubling him.

I laughed out loud when I read that Speedy was that tall. I had exactly the same image….which I guess means people would think I’m a blonde dog. :woman_shrugging:
Thanks for the reports everyone. (I was going to say blonde ■■■■■…but that may well be too close to the truth )

Training report:

Good conditions to train today. Little wind but quite cool. Modified group was Wright, Stringer, Ridley, Caddy, Wanganeen, Reid (no concern), Hobbs and Shiel… though Shiel did start integrating into sim work. His first play in fact was a great defensive punch and the whole team cheered him as a way of saying welcome back. Modified group was in part a bit of player management before season starts. Get rid of any niggles.

Was a shorter sharp session today and you sensed they were building for the Saints game on Friday. Teams were very even so it was not a case of one side looks like a round 1 fit. Good players were playing on the player wanting their spit.

Duel i loved watching was Setterfield and Durham. Both went at it hard. Durham was sensational today and the best I have seen him as an inside mid. Can’t help think we see another level from Sam this year. Setters was still strong so it was a good physical competitive challenge to watch.

Duursma for a 3rd week in a row stood out again so he is a lock in the team for me now. His defensive running a real standout. Helped his back 6 on so many occasions. Just won plenty of the footy and could be a real significant signing. Especially when you saw Martin dominate today and just control the game and tempo. Fills a big need Duursma on the wing to give us better upgraded talent to help other quality players like Martin shine at half back.

Draper played his first match practice minutes and was surprisingly good straight away. Did some nice runs and took some marks on the wing to help out. I did hear though club thinks they still will be cautious with him and possibly will miss round one. Scott keen to have another 3-4 weeks of fitness and practice on him.

Caldwell had his best session today. Played his inside role and looked sharp and ready. Inside work was a treat.

Menzie also had his best session. Seemed to be everywhere…and like I mentioned previously, has found an extra yard in pace. His pressure and physicality was great and had a good tandem partnership with Gresham who once again was solid.

Langford was the most impressive forward today and took some really strong marks under heavy pressure. Probably could have received some free kicks and his defender on occasions resorted to holding him. He looks so good does Kyle… not sure what his ceiling is tbh.

SSP hopeful was there today… but yeh not sold on him. I know its just one session but hmmm

Parish is now a given that he was pretty dominant but i am really appreciating his extra poise with the bal to balance his body which is making his kicking more effective. Thinking through the play much better. Really hope it translates to real games.

Overall a good little session. Boys were very communicative and felt in sync on messaging. They seem very close and tight knit… authentically so. Its been a good pre-season and i have to say our most consistent in effort, standards and attn to detail since my time watching

Side notes: Jayden Davey coming along well and seems too of picked up the pace now and getting to a lot more contests.

Tex told us that he is aiming for round 3 return. He has put on a LOT of muscle… looks so different that it’s hard to recognise him.

Agreed. Setterfield isn’t a highlight reel player but is going very well, will be vital for us

I get the feeling we might see less of Stringer at CB’s and more of Durham (& Perkins)

Sammy has been in there quite a bit and he just brings serious energy and intensity, when he returned to preseason having bulked up a lot i figured he was set for more mid time.

Hi all, just returned home from my first ever Essendon training session. I will try to give some insights, keeping in mind that I really have nothing to compare what I saw today to.

Before I give my thoughts on a few players I will say that overall I thought it was a good session. The intensity certainly wasn’t at the level of an AFL match but I wouldn’t expect it to be. I thought we set up well defensively and the coaches were vocal with instructions about being in the right spot. Every time someone broke up a piece of play there was a loud cheer from their teammates. It’s clearly an area we have been focusing on.

Our ball movement was generally good and it was nice to see us lower our eyes and hit up a leading player on quite a few occasions. With no Wright out there they were definitely forced to be more selective with forward entries. There were still a fair share of rushed kicks to an outnumbered contest but it wasn’t too bad.

Players that stood out to me:

Durham - wow. I had heard that he was playing more on ball but he surprised me today. He has always had an outstanding attack on the footy but he now has the body to do some serious damage. I wasn’t expecting him to be so clean below his knees and excellent with his hands as I had thought of those as weaknesses for him in the past. His spread from stoppages and ability to link up was also eye catching. The only other player on our list who brings his energy to the contest is Draper but Durham is much more clean and coordinated. I’m very excited for what 2024 has in store for him after today.

Setterfield - very impressive today. Brings something different to our midfield, great defensively with so many one percenters. Can also take a mark around the ground which is a nice.

Perkins - those wanting him to be a permanent forward will be disappointed. Expect him to get his fair share of CBAs this year. He looks much more comfortable and natural playing as a midfielder compared to last year. His use going inside F50 is also great and particularly important for us with Martin moving to half back. I thought he had a good session today.

Caldwell - you have to pay attention to see the work he does but his inside work is super valuable. Really good in and under player. Also kicked a goal.

Tsatas - played a fair bit of wing and was pretty good. It’s not his natural position but he definitely knows how to link up and find the footy and is super dynamic. With regards to his kicking, anything 20-30m was ok, those short kicks seem flatter and more reliable compared to last year where he used to loop them up a lot. The issue is 40m+ where he seems to lose all control. I only recall one really bad shank when he was sprinting inside 50 to have a shot and it went OOTF. He’s borderline best 22 for mine.

Martin - less prolific compared to whats been described in previous sessions but when he did have the ball he looks very dangerous. I’m a fan of the new role and think he’s gonna set up a lot of play for us this year. We need to get the ball into his hands as much as possible.

Cox - I was impressed with his session. Good intensity and looked very assured when the ball came his way. Played a mixture of intercepting/rebounding half back and wing. At one point he got forward and kicked a nice goal. Not sure if he’ll play round 1 but I was happy with what I saw today.

Reid - don’t think he participated in match sim which disappointed me as he was probably in the top 3 players I was most excited to see. I don’t think there’s any injury concern, just managing loads and in the drills beforehand he showed some breathtaking skills for a man his size.

Ridley - played probably the first half of the sim and looked his usual self.

Langford - looks like he’ll pick up where he left off last year

Gresham - the new recruit that stood out to me the most today. It’s a real talent to be playing high half forward role and be as involved as he is. Super hard to tackle and always finds a way to get a handball out. Will rotate on ball at times as well.

Menzie - Wasn’t bad but I would like to see a bit more from him. He’s physical and applies good pressure but think he needs to find another level

Goldstein - actually Goldy might have been the new recruit that stood out to me most. I don’t care that he’s 35 he’s pretty clearly our number 1 ruck at the moment

Draper - great to see him back out there. Had a few moments where he exploded into space and looked super exciting.

Jones - took a few nice marks but was overall just not productive enough. With no Wright, Caddy or Stringer out there he should have done more. Would be playing Draper as second ruck/KPF over him come round 1 if fit.

I’m very curious who ends up playing the wing roles this year with Martin and Durham clearly being earmarked for other roles. Duursma certainly has one at this point, his defensive running is outstanding.

It’s basically any time he tries to put any hoof into whilst running at pace

His short passes are fine. Rest of his game he is excellent really too.

I think the boys can’t wait to crack in against opposition players, bring on next Friday.

Lol, I always pictured you as a skinny 170cm nerd. To hear that you are a 200cm adonis makes me feel inadequate.

If any player is going to get that, he is a great choice.

Thanks for the report!

Who needs Nick Daicos!

I see Durham has already won the Brownlow. Top effort that. :+1:

Did Kelly play a wing today? Any thoughts?
I can see them using him to roll back to cover Martin’s man when he follows the play.
Thanks for your report- it’s excellent.

Unfortunately I’m not the former

I also have a beard and get people asking me if I’m Charlie Dixon from time to time

You are still special, valued and loved Cloney

Great report!

Seems like more family day than a training day with intensity all to do with with workloads.
