Former Melbourne forward Sam Weideman is impressing his new teammates and coaches, who have vowed to provide him with more AFL opportunities next season.
Weideman, 25, has been one of the standouts on the track in the early part of pre-season and was working nicely as a second tall forward alongside Peter Wright during some match simulation at training on Wednesday.
The 197cm forward had struggled to hold down a spot in the Melbourne side since debuting in 2016, having played a total of 59 AFL games including 10 this year.
“He couldn’t have impressed everyone more – his attitude, his professionalism, his intensity on the track,” new Essendon coach Brad Scott said.
“Sometimes players just need the opportunity. He played some really good footy at Melbourne when he had the opportunity, but he also had some really good players competing for a similar spot. We think we can provide the opportunity, provided Sam holds up his end of the bargain.”

I think he’s going to surpise

(That might be a bit of a hot take, but plenty of ex captains keep playing and play well after handing over the keys)

Unpopular opinion, but the bar hasn’t been set high thus far with Jones and Baldwin. Competition has not been great.

Not that I have given up on Jones and Baldwin. They just haven’t looked likely and always seem to be injured.

Was wacthing Essendon highlights on youtube with my newphew last night his favourite player right now is big Sammy Draper but my brother in law has got him playing soccer hopefully he dosen’t completely lose intrest in footy would love to take him to his first AFL match

I watched Weiderman get easily out bodied by McGrath at training a week or so back. Yeh he actually is decent on the lead but if our game continues to be to a kick it long method… i am just not as confident he has the appetite to compete physically. Saying that Wright in his first pre season was the same and he worked his butt off to improve and it turned his whole career around. Thats the hope

Yes, but that’s not Brad Scott and this new iterations fault. Blame the previous lot for that. Brad Scott said on day 1 it will take time. Repeated today.

Jones needs 12-18 months of physical development and playing in the VFL before he is ready ….Weed can play second ruck- he is ahead of Jones for round 1

Really ? I think that says everything about Weidman’s lack of hunger and competitiveness, not great signs.

Weideman is coming out of a top footy program where training at intensity and being professional would be standard. He’s also got a point to prove and wanting to impress upon coaches and new team mates.

And the opportunity to play fwd/ruck with Wright #1 fwd is right there for the taking so he certainly wouldn’t be cruising.
