Travel Thread (Part 1)

Sorry to hear that - what a nightmare.

You are probably across it, but this contains some potentially useful information re. steps you might take - Cybercrime update | Media Releases (latitudefinancial.com.au)

(FWIW I took out my card in 2012 when it was still issued by GE Money - I’ll keep my fingers crossed)

Please be assured we will contact you directly if your personal information has been disclosed.

This was part of the email I received yesterday from Latitude.

I am assuming from this my personal info ha been compromised, but not disclosed…… yet

How long ago was this? Assume it was a 28 degrees card?

I got mine when it was still GE 28 degrees Card, so hoping im safe (still got the generic email on Friday tho). Based on your email it seems to be very focused on the application info, less so general info on customers (although if it’s still ongoing, who knows).

My partner got a latitude 28 degrees card last year tho, so am expecting will be getting a similar email to yours soon unfortunately.

Got a 28 deg card mid last year.

Hmm bugger, exactly the same as my partner. Probably best to assume in the same boat as you then!

Good luck with it all. After the Optus hack last year the ‘Credit Savy’ app was recommended to a lot of people. Gives you a notification if any credit history request is put out for you (i.e. if you apply for a credit card / loan or if someone is fraudulently doing so in your name) - so you can get on top of it before anyone actually gets a card / loan.

Also allows you to block credit checks on yourself (meaning it would be very hard for anyone to get a loan / card in your name). I am not sure whether this blocks credit checks with all credit reporting agencies or just some.

Cheers for that info. Good to know. I’ll look them up. The 3 credit check organisations listed in the Latitude email get absolutely slated in reviews. I find quite the irony in having to input personal details into a site that gets slated to run a credit check…

I’m really piissed off with this. It’s a great way to trash Latitude’s brand. I won’t consider them for anything again, and I don’t have confidence in using that c/card now. Anyone considering one of their products right now would have rocks in their head.

The few hundred I’ve saved in international transaction fees will be more than offset by having to get a new passport, new driver’s license, change bank accounts etc. etc.

Same. Think I’m on the 3rd different name for the card.

Don’t recall giving anything particularly sensitive in the application process. They were different times, though. Much more stringent ID checking these days.

A few European flights will be rerouted with the French air traffic controllers strike. It was a bonus once for me, from Geneva to London, flew up the Thames at night to Heathrow, London at its best all lit up.
Unfortunately Charles and Camilla have been forced to cancel their trip and will miss out on dinner at the Palace of Versailles.

More than a few flights disrupted as overflying is banned which results in massive delays and cancellations. This will be their fourth major strike this year and many airlines will be seeking compensation from the French government

Late reply -

Your plan looks good to me. We stayed 2 weeks in BA and had enough to do, but we had no specific time limits. Iguazu is cool and worth the trip up for sure.

We did one high end refugio night when walking TdP but the rest kinda ‘glamping’, was organized via an excellent operator - can get the name if you’d like (we did in Jan 2017).

Santiago is a cool place, maybe a couple days there. Valpo if you have an extra day.

You could also cut through Bolivia post Santiago to do Uyuni and the surrounding plains - also did a tour there and it was awesome. You mightn’t have the time.

Enjoy!

Latitude Financial hack: details of 7.9 million drivers licences stolen in data breach (theage.com.au)

Getting worse

Yeah, pls let me know who you went with.

TdP has become insanely expensive. For three of us it would cost AUD$9-11K to do a small group 4 night W hike staying in dorms & eating bad food. That is more than double the cost of doing the Milford Track with Ultimate Hikes where sir may choose from rack of Lamb, salmon or the vegetarian option for dinner.

So we are looking at hiring a car, basing ourselves just outside the park in the Rio Serrano area and driving in for day hikes. Otherwise, for Patagonia we have 4 nights in El Chalten and 2 in El Calafate for Los Glaciares NP.

July 19th we are meant to be in Tel Aviv for 2 nights stop over on the way back to Bangkok and then Bali.
Needless to say I’m watching the situation very closely and have booked flights out of Amman as a fallback option.

Go somewhere safe like Damascus.

I’d love to go back there but can’t see it happening anytime soon. We had some points to burn and was some good availability back from TLV-BKK with El Al and AMM-BKK on Royal Jordanian so booked both just to be safe. It’s not integral to our trip so no biggie if one gets cancelled

Melasti Beach, Uluwatu, Bali - nice little spot to watch the Bombers get up!

Anyone ventured into Hong Kong, post-protests/riots, covid and with China getting their hooks more and more in? I was last there in 2019 and would love to go back.

Noticeable changes at all, or is it pretty much “as you were”?

@yaco55 still lives there don’t they?
I haven’t been there since 2019 but keen to go back this year if I can squeeze it in

I’m about to book Mel<->Syd flights to connect to our Syd<->Santiago flights. I’ll get QANTAS to link the two bookings, which I understand means they will manage the connections.

For domestic-international connections, IIRC, QANTAS will check our luggage through to Santiago when we check in in Mel, and in Syd we will need to transfer to the international terminal and go through security & immigration. I’m looking at 2hrs 40mins on the ground in Syd for this connection.

Coming back, I assume we will need a bit more time to pass thru immigration, get luggage, go thru customs and then transfer to the domestic terminal. So I’m thinking 3hrs 10mins for this connection.

These connection times are both longer than QANTAS allow for if I booked straight Mel<-> Santiago flights.

Seem OK?
