It seems code share flights are risky if things change. Communication can be very poor and the onus is on the passenger to actively stay across things.
1st hand experience - booked QANTAS flights that code-shared with Air Tahiti Nui. ATN crew went on strike. Flight from AKL-Tahiti was cancelled and a substitute Air Calin plane / crew was charted with different flight number and departure time 2 hours earlier. There was NO communication from QANTAS. I only found out when checking departure times on the airport website. There was also no reponse from QANTAS when I emailed querying my return flight.
2nd hand experience - neighbours booked Turkish Airlines to Europe that code shared with QANTAS to (I think) Singapore. The QANTAS flight was cancelled or rescheduled and re-routed. There was NO communication from Turkish Airlines. The neighbours missed their flight & had to buy new one-way tickets to Europe on Singapore Airlines. They are now battling Turkish Airlines & insurance to cover costs.
Maybe Aceman can throw some light on why these things happen.
But bottom line - buyer beware!
Codeshares often encounter problems and it usually because the IT between airlines doesn’t “talk” to one another.
In your first example, you haven’t mentioned who you purchased the tickets through but regardless whoever you purchased them through is in effect your travel agent and it’s on them to notify you of any changes.
The second example sounds as though it was booked with Turkish Airlines and they have a interline agreement with Qantas but not a codeshare agreement but that still doesn’t excuse Turkish Airlines of any liability’s and they should have organised the connecting flight free of charge. Poor by them.
The first example was a classic rewards flight booked through Qantas
So in that case Qantas is the marketing airline and ATN are the operating airline. Qantas effectively buys a number of seats off ATN and are your travel agent. ATN still have a responsibility to notify Qantas who then have to notify you
We always book overseas flights whether paid for or on points with our Travel Agent. She and her Staff have fixed any problems encountered anywhere in the world, no matter the time of day here.
A good TA is worth their weight in gold for folk who are haven’t got the time, inclination or necessary skills to do it themselves. Would absolutely recommend people use one if they are uncertain. I still tap in to my good friend that is a Corporate TA from time to time but even now it’s getting too hard for many of those and not worth their while. I’m lucky that’s it’s a side hobby and do most myself with her log ins but it’s a very shady industry
I think you messed up the punctuation between those two thoughts!
Currently in Canberra and visited The War Memorial today.
First time there in 17 years and really wanted to see this painting “Midnight at The Menin Gate”
It’s such an evocative piece of art.
Moving to Cocacabana, Rio next week for a couple of months. Any absolute ‘must do’s’ other than the obvious attractions along the beaches. This has been a fairly snap decision so i’ve not done a whole lot of research.
Maybe this is also obvious to you, but it is a place where you need to be very careful. At night there is always some place to have lots of fun, but it can be a dangerous as a war-zone. The constant harassment by people trying to sell you things also get very tedious.
Yeah I have experience with that. My party days are over, it’ll be cocktails on the balcony for me after dark.
At my age, I just pace myself. Don’t start drinking Caipirinhas until after lunch and stop at midnight.
Museu Sitio Burle Marx
There’s Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer, but you’ll hardly be on your own visiting those.
But it’s all about the beaches here. All very attractive/impressive, plenty of color and movement. It’s not just Copacabana, there’s a whole string of beaches in this part of Rio. If beachy stuff is your thing … great but if not there is a certain sameness about it all which does wear off quite quickly. This area is also tourist central … pick-pocketing and petty thieving is a well-developed art-form here (as BF mentioned in a previous post).
Such a long time since I was there, but at that time, dress down, no jewellery, no bag, everything in a waist pouch, public transport was not very safe, use private coaches along the beach front ( taxis held up at the lights robbed etc) . Take the bare minimum to the beach , keep any valuables in a waterproof container on the person or pay someone to guard if swimming
Lots of the theatre of life on the beaches at weekends, good food.
It’s no different now. I was there just pre-pandemic. Walking along the beach promenade a passing policewoman advised to put a gold neck chain I was wearing under my t-shirt. She made it clear someone would be brazen enough to rip it off if they could see it.
You should see a girl named Lola. She’s a showgirl. You can find yellow flowers in her hair and a dress cut down to there.
Theres paragliding you can do over rio taking in their big sites outside.
Not sure if its a must do but its on my bucket list when i visit.
Theres a few great museums/art galleries food etc. as i understand it Rio is one of the worlds great international cities. Will just be a good time being there.
Id get out on the water, you can go sailing as a tourist im pretty sure.
Learn a bit of Samba? Make sure you eat brazilian BBQ all that sorta stuff too.
