Anyone been to Jordan?
Might have an opportunity to go there for a seminar next year and was wondering if there is anything else worthwhile to see in the region? And how easy is it to travel there?
Thinking of going to Petra and the Gulf Of Aqaba to get my Transformers n3rd on
I went to Petra many years ago (before it became famous) and I rate it as one of the most awe inspiring places I have ever seen.
Great snorkelling (or diving if you're interested) on the reefs near Aqaba and floating in the Dead Sea is certainly an experience (preferrable with no small cuts for the water to get into ;) )
Am going to be near Munich a week before it and am not sure whether I should stick around through Oktoberfest or shovel off to another country. I like the cultural stuff (Pamplona during San Fermin sounds awesome) but I’m not too sure about Oktoberfest. Not a huge fan of ‘drinkathons’ on holidays.
If anyone can offer some advice of what it’s like, it’ll be much appreciated.

Anyone done Oktoberfest in Germany?

How old are you, where will you be the week before and who are you travelling with?

I've been four times.
Am 35. It's part of a long trip from May to November starting in Italy to Spain to northern France, pickup some of the Scandanavian countries to northern Germany to Poland to Czech to southern Germany then finish up in Switzerland.
Have another friend who is going to Oktoberfest but nothing is really booked yet. Will be coming from Prague so will probably do a one night stop over in Nuremberg.
After Oktoberfest then I might trek down to Stuttgart for the Volkfest (have heard it is pretty good but haven't looked into it much) before shovelling off to Zurich.
Still trying to iron out the details but it looks like I might give Oktoberfest a skip and throw more money into the Pamplona / San Fermin trip, shorten the entire trip and maybe throw in a few days in Dubai before dropping by Oz.

why leave the czech republic with THE BEST beer in the world, at amazingly low prices, with some of the best looking women in Europe, and go to a beer hall packed with Contiki tours and pay 10 times the price for beer?
(that was my thought process after spendiing a couple months around europe, but im sure you will enjoy it eiher way...)
I agree with you tinhillterror. The Czech girls are the best by far. I’m in Prague for around 5 days (plenty of time to take in the area) and also including Brno (for a few days) and Cesky Krumlov (another few days) around that time after the Poland trip.
I’ve gotten to the point where I either do Munich (after already doing Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hanover, Berlin & Dresden) or The Swiss Alps.
am looking for a place to stay for a few days in late February. Cottage/cabin, rural setting, ideally right next to a lake/river with good fishing!
Preferably out west - will be in Daylesford for a wedding on the Saturday, so looking at a radius from there to the Murray, Grampians, Camperdown etc. but not as far as Portland or Swan Hill.
Doesn't have to be luxurious but needs to be comfortable
oh, also needs to be in mobile range or have internet access
Also, if you haven't been to New Zealand yet..... GO!!! :)

I did think about booking there! were a few spots around the Grampians that looked good. Ended up finding a house on the Campaspe River. Four days of lazing around, reading, fishing.... bliss!
Does anyone have any suggestions for the North Island of NZ?
NZ has so much to see that has no parallel in Australia. A region that few tourists visit is the "arm" of land extending north of Auckland. Depends on what you preferences are, but Doubtless Bay would be a lovely place to have as a base and visit surrounding sights.
My uncle, a photographer, visited there early 1967. Only problem was that he didn't make the return trip. A semi saw to that.
Sorry to hear that. The main highways there are so bad that I can only stand one trip there every 10 years or so. It must be the locals' way of keeping the area to themselves. I still recommend it though.
Has anyone tried to get tickets to the football matches in Italy? I am going to the San Siro and Milan are playing that night so I went on the website to see if I can get them, but no games come up.
Not sure if you found out what you wanted to know. I've been to San Siro to see AC. Just rocked up, it was a sell out, but big crowd outside having a bit of a party while the game was on. They opened the gates with about 20 mins to go so I got inside for free. Do it if you get the chance amazing place - a huge sea of heaving red and black, noise, flags, chants and flares. Those big corkscrew thingys on the corners of stadium are spiral walkways that empty the place in about 15 minutes. No sign of any aggro or violence among fans.
As it happened this game clinched the championship for AC so the city was gridlocked afterwards with everyone honking horns and chanting. The game finished at about 6pm. It took me hours to drive out of Milan to Como, didn't get there till 1am. I ended up sleeping in the car by the lake because it was too late to look for anywhere to stay.
I've also been in Florence when Fiorentina played at home and Cagliari when they played at home. I found it a bit hard to get info in advance about what games were on locally (my Italian was limited - it took me a month to realise you have to say "calcio"). There wasn't any buildup, then suddenly on game day fans would be everywhere and kids would be chanting on the buses. This was in 90s when not much internet, had to try to decipher Italian TV and papers, expect it is much easier now.
Depends what you like doing.
I lived there for 15 years, so give me a bit more info on age, who you are travelling with, likes / dislikes.
Well I had a credit I with Virgin that I had to use up, anniversary was coming up, credit had to be used, saw specials to Auckland and went 'meh, never been there before' so booked flights.
Was going to head over to Waiheke Island for a couple of days, but wondering if there's a 'MUST DO' over there.
Depends how long you are there, where you are based, whether you have own transport, who you are travelling with, what your interests are, etc. etc.
I'm out of touch with nightlife options, but you could consider:
Ferry out to Rangitoto Island & walk to the summit (iconic dormant volcano in the harbour which last erupted a few 100 years ago).
The West Coast black sand surf beaches (Piha, Karekare, Whatipu) - great if you like exploring wild coastlines, or surfing for that matter.
Domain Museum (free to enter & good views of the city & harbour).
Waihiki Island could be good for beaches, kayaking & wineries.
Snorkelling / diving at Poor Knights Islands (a couple of hours north).
We're heading over to Piha Beach for the night, then back through some ranges, then up the coast or something. Not 100% sure yet, will just make it up as we go I think!
Please, when it gets to Winter in Melbourne, never say "oh, it's freezing". Because it probably isn't. Here right now, it's -3, with a windchill factor of -10.
HTFU. When I lived in upper New York State, my high school had Friday night excursions to ski (I miss cheap accessible skiing). They had a temperature (wind-chill) when they would cancel: -40! (is where C and F cross over) It never actually got anywhere near that bad in my time, luckily. And that's the windchill when you're still, not when zipping down the hill or exposed on the elevated lift!

So you never actually experienced it though...
Yeah, I'll harden up then shall I?
I don't actually mind it, though new note to self, don't take out the bins in just a t-shirt and jeans.

Nothing a boiling hot cup of coffee wouldn't sort out.
