Unpopular Opinion

Football Park is the same over here. The surface is still in great nick but will be interesting to see if the council keep it in such good shape once the Crows move

Once at Waverley me and the family were sitting a few metres from the channel 7 commentary box. At half time I watched Dennis Cometti eatig a salad roll at the top of the stairs. He saw me looking and gave me a wink.

At the time, it was probably the highlight of my existence.

Compelling and rich.

Came into the sport too late, right as Waverley was being made obsolete, so I never went there. But I’ve driven by it occasionally and it always struck me as being a really long way from anything. I think I’d have kept it though, at least for some of the clubs based out that way. There’s no real home ground advantages in Melbourne. If we are gonna keep nine teams here then we should probably have three grounds.

Why they never built the train out there is a mystery.

Premier Cain was on the MCG Trust - the Opposition camp to Waverley as the home of Australian Rules.

I wish we could accommodate 9 home grounds that are all unique from each other similar to the UK, it’ll never happen but I think it would be great

Yoyos or melting moments or what ever those ■■■■ biscuits are called are terrible. Not so much taste wise. Just the texture. Almost unswallowable. Guaranteed to remove any saliva you have left in your mouth.

Sounds like not enough butter to me.

I used to have them with my Gran, when I was little.

They need to be eaten with a cup of tea.

Its a conundrum though, would we really want to play Fremantle at Princes park if that was the Third ground.

I mean it would make sense for the Blues to push some home games there if they could

  • Freo/Port/Suns/GWS/Tassie/North/Dogs

Princes Park has 25K capacity.

North should play some games in Ballarat.
Essendon should request a away game in TAS

I wouldn’t mind that.
Has to be a genuine afternoon game, though, and that’s where it gets tricky with broadcasting.
I watched Adelaide play Carlton (I think it was Carlton) there.
Good ground.
Great atmos.

It’s an interesting thought, though.
Grounds; MCG, Marvel, Princes, Ballarat, Tasmania, fit to size.
Nice deal for Geelong, though.
Still…interesting.

Imagine there’s no home grounds
I wonder if you can…

Edit: It means Melbourne never plays GC at the ‘G. And surely they shouldn’t?

Ive been to Princes park back when it was optus oval and watched Carlton vs Fremantle I think.
never been to Waverley.

I’ve been to both.
VFL Park was like the ALP…a wonderful idea.

Terrible viewing, hard to get to and get out of, but it could have been…

Anyway, I saw Ablett and Salmon kick something like 25 goals in one game between them there, so…you can’t hate that.

And so too Joe Misiti if I remember correctly. He sued the basterds too. If I remember correctly.

Cold. The nickname “artic park” was well earned. The carpark was huge as the public transport there was terrible but at the end of big games it could take over 1 hour to get out the gates only to find jammed local streets. The stadium itself was great for groups with about 75% of the seating all public so you could sit wherever you wanted. The atmosphere didnt have the same cauldron effect as the G but we did have some epic games out there. I still remember beating Collingwood there in 81 with Simon Madden putting on a clinic. It was very much a reawakening of the club and we were a feared team for most of the next 20 years from then.

PS, Tim Watson jumping the pack in our Escort (or was it Stirling) cup win was another memorable Waverley moment. It was the first thing the club had won anything for a while so was a breakout moment.

Justin Blumfield would’ve won the 2000 Norm Smith medal, but Sheedy deliberately took him off in the final quarter to give Hird the chance to win it.

Robbed.

I’m over it, but I’ll let someone courtesy of The Age say it for me:

Americanised language

There has been a lot of consternation about Aussies adopting Americanisms at a rapid rate. While this may be dismissed as the bleating of Boomers, I can tell you that, as a Millennial, I have noticed it too. Aussies on the radio saying “Happy ‘Noo’ Year” and “manda-tory” and ’terri-tory” instead of “mandat’ry” and “territ’ry”. The use of verbs for nouns (when did an invitation become an invite?), the gradual encroachment of the banal “happy holidays” in place of Merry Christmas. And when did shopping centres become shopping malls?

Pretty sure the shootout in 1993 - Ablett 14 and salmon 10 - was at the G?

Surely not?
