The Dems will be wanting one of the losing republicans to run as an independent and split the vote. If deSantis or someone is the nominee, they’ll want Trump to run out of sheer ego, his still-large personal following among the R base will make it impossible for desantis to win a presidential election in a non-preferential system.
If Trump wins the nomination, they’ll hope someone like Cheney will run as an independent. She’d never win and I’m sure she knows it, but even if she only gets 2-3% of the vote from that handful of republicans who can’t stomach Trump, that’s likely enough to make a Trump victory very very hard. And she might just be motivated to run as a pure spoiler candidate.
Lets face it, the October surprise delivered by Comey was probably what tipped the scales against Clinton. She did, after all win the popular vote by millions in spite of being disliked. The other factor IMO was that she did not get into the gutter and dispute Trumps lies and defend herself which made her look weak.
Mate, I live here and can tell you that in many ways the country has already split. California has pretty much seceded in all but name. Same can be said about the South. Worse, the population has split completely and in my opinion, irreversibly. Democrats and Republicans HATE each other even if they live next to each other. There is a LOT of good here but increasingly a LOT of evil.
