US politics - cooked

Look, I’m not saying he’s worth a look…but the barrel has been scraped pretty bare.

I’d rather an anti vaccine wing nut (as long as he lets people decide their own treatment) than the current crop of anti ‘woke’ scum.

Huh? He’s nominating to run as a DEMOCRAT.

Hmmm…

Ok, I see.

Who else is he up against then? Surely Biden needs to transition to someone sooner or later.

Yeah, appears a bit of a nutter.

I read last week that Biden is thinking of running again!!!

I expect Biden to run again. There seems to be a pathological need over there that politicians resist retiring no matter how old they get. The senate is stuffed with 70yos. Besides, the VP is always the front runner in any primary contest, and I reckon there a bunch of faceless Democrat machine people who reckon a black woman can’t win and would prefer Biden stay around instead of Kamala Harris.

Can’t see Pete Buttigieg getting the nod either.

Would a gay man have any realistic chance?

Case in point, Feinstein. Has been too frail to do the job for months, with no signs she can get back. The judiciary committee can’t do anything without her. She won’t retire, and the GOP won’t let the Dems off the hook by helping them remove her from the committee.

Not disputing that race and gender play a role, but Harris is unpopular thanks to other factors of her own making.

The only plausible challenger to Biden would be a governor with a high profile (like Newsome) or a complete outsider. Bernie had his chances, Warren screwed up last time around and is done, mayor Pete hasn’t looked great in his role and Williamson just straight-up doesn’t have the votes.

Jamie Raskin comes across pretty well…very knowledgeable, calm and well spoken.

60yo so a reasonable age (but has been fighting cancer so probably wouldn’t want the additional stress…not to mention the negative press that would generate).

The cupboard is farking bare.

Another case in point of someone hanging around for too long [though not a pollie] was RBG. If she had pulled the pin earlier the SCOTUS may not be quite the Trumpaholic shambles it is now.

I like Warren, but she and Sanders are both simply too old. The USA has simply GOT to start having generational change in the leadership some time soon. It’s starting to look like the late-80s USSR over there, with all these 70- and 80-somethings trying to run the place between naps.

I’m not too familiar with the other possibilities, governors etc. They’ll all be keeping their heads way down right now anyway. If Biden decides to run again he’ll get the nomination unopposed cos none of them want to challenge a sitting prez, but if he decides to retire, then Harris will probably face some challengers.

The only time a sitting president has not got the nomination is LBJ. He stood aside because he did not want to run against Robert Kennedy Snr.

However, there has to be serious consideration being given to whether Biden runs again. They are being very careful to limit his schedule as he simply does not have the energy to do more and he is having more moments where he looks or sounds like he is no longer of sound mind. Even the fact that Robert Kennedy Jnr is polling 14% versus Biden (67%) amongst democrat voters for the nomination when he’s a nutjob is concerning. Biden’s support should be higher but voters are concerned with his age and frailty.

I can’t see Harris getting the nomination if Biden steps aside - she’s deeply unpopular and has been terrible.

The best alternatives to Biden, if he chooses not to run, would probably be Newsom or Pritzker as it currently stands. Both have already started positioning themselves in the event that Biden steps aside. Newsom will certainly run in 2028 if there’s no opportunity to do so in 2024.

Do you have to be a governor or some kind of politician to become president? What was trump before elected as president, I don’t recall him being anything?

Edit. So maybe they could go with a celebrity prez

I confess I’ve hardly noticed her existence. I was under the impression that she’d basically spent all her tim in the Senate, because with the 50-50 split there at the moment, the Dems need her to cast the deciding vote.

What’s she actually done?

Since FDR, Trump seems to have been the only Pres whose previous experience had been entirely in the private sector.
Eisenhower was a West Point Graduate who had spent his entire career in the army, accustomed to institutional structures , disciplines, chains of command and authority.

Unfortunately there is little evidence that Harris has the juice to win any contest less skewed than being a Democrat Senator up for re-election in California.

I’m a fan of Klobuchar because she can win purple, but I doubt she has the star power.

Her first year was affected by covid and up to the midterms she was needed to tie-break the vote in the senate.
But your comment pretty much sums up her issue - she has been pretty invisible. When she has increased her profile it’s been too often because she’s had a bad interview, the border interview, what does a vice president do interview, space speech etc.

What about AOC? Too young or maybe too left?
