US politics - cooked

How can you even pretend to be a functional democracy when the highest level of arbitration is appointed for life, by whichever factional party is in power at the time one of the SCOTUS folks carks it?

It wasn’t until 1977 that a retirement age of 7O applied to our Commonwealth Judges.
It required an amendment to our Constitution to eliminate life tenure.

Point of order: even if Dems hold Presidency, they don’t get to appoint SCOTUS judges, as we saw when that Turtle bloke held up proceedings until they could appoint that liar when Trump was elected.

Fair call
I thought that going after the senators/ representatives who were patently involved with Jan 6th might be a start. The senate is such a fine line that one or two could make a huge difference.
But they wont/ cant.
Frustrating when one Party seems to try to stick to the rules/ norms and the other thinks all is fair game.

Answers in order:

  1. That’s what he says. The justification given was that those rules applied for ~16 years under three separate administrations and were defended by the government. Further, the case will be heard on the merits very shortly and they can get the relief they seek then. He doesn’t consider that they have shown they will suffer irreparable harm if the stay is not granted in those circumstances in the interim.

  2. He states that they have leveraged district court injunctions as a basis for implementing a desired policy while evading both necessary agency procedures and judicial review. That is, they had a choice of decisions to seek a stay about and the judge considers they chose the texas one to seek a stay about to avoid complying with the law.

  3. He states that they hadn’t taken any steps to do so at the time of the SC hearing.

Now that the Dominion case has been settled and Lachlan has withdrawn from his defamation case against Crikey, it’s pretty much Open Season for MSM and social media to hit on Fox, Rupe and Lachlan for lies, whether or not fact based.
They don’t want to take the stand.

Based on recent links in this thread, he’s running out of States in which to do so if that’s his aim!

We know about the dominion settlement but I found this part of the story in the Economist very, very interesting…
“They (Fox) can’t move until their audience moves,”

Audience capture

image

  • Privately people at the network called Ms Powell and Mr Giuliani kooks, full of “crazy stuff”. But the audience ate it up. “Any day with Rudy and Sidney is guaranteed gold!”, wrote a producer to colleagues.

  • Having followed the audience…Fox then attempted to lead

  • For at least three months the network did not grant Mr Trump an interview, and tried hard instead to boost Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis. Aides to Mr DeSantis have fed story ideas and talking points to Fox, according to records obtained by the Tampa Bay Times. Mr DeSantis appeared on the network nearly once a day for months after the election of 2020. It is the kind of collaborative relationship Mr Murdoch seeks with conservative politicians and so unlike that with Mr Trump, who openly criticises the network on social media.

  • But the audience would not be led. During hearings of the January 6th Committee, the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago, or Mr Trump’s indictment by Manhattan prosecutors, Fox rallied to Mr Trump’s defence. “They can’t move until their audience moves,” says Nicole Hemmer, a historian of conservative media at Vanderbilt University.

Whats new about lying anyway, lets be fair, women lie about messing around on the side because they want to hold their family together. Men lie about having an affair because they know their hard earned will be split in 2 and they would be out on the street if they admit it.
So News Corp is just a reflection of the people who run it. They will lie to maintain their position.

Is your argument really that “all adults have affairs and lie about it so it’s ok for Foxtel to lie”?

Wow, there’s a leap you don’t see every day. He didn’t say it was OK but rather people lie to maintain their positions.

The use of the word “is just” does imply it’s acceptable.

But heh, drop the “all” from my question and I still think its a weird take.

Republicans will do anything for their side.

Fox didn’t allow him to say goodbye on air. No farewell episode.
