US politics - fried (part 5)

Yep.

Massive free kick.

$400M+ down to $175M is an amazing outcome for him.

I’m interested to hear from those who think Trump will win. What has he done since 2020 (while he had incumbent advantage) to gain undecided voters in the swing states?

I get it that the media pushes the idea that he is ahead. But the truth is Trump has not done a single thing to win over new voters since he lost and subsequently tried to steal the presidency. He has double down on everything his base expects from him and alienate every other voter, which is exactly how he lost in 2020.

I expect Trump will refuse to concede again. Then further bleed the GOP dry until 2028 where he runs against hopefully a younger Dem like Newsom

You could have typed the exact same thing four years ago and it would have been just as valid. Yet Trump won more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016.

That’s the primary source of my own pessimism leading into this next election

Trump is doing his best to elevate voting rates
the question is which side he is elevating it the most!

It’s a cult.

He is the leader. He does no wrong. Every bad thing that happens to him is the libs’ fault. They think he was sent by Jesus.

It’s never been about what he will do for people.

He hates who they hate. That’s it. That’s all that’s left.

Also, this:

Yeah I certainly understand it’s a cult. But to win you need to convince undecided/independent voters who are very much not in the cult.

Trumo hinself, and a lot of his backed candidates have lost every election since 2016. I really don’t see him suddenly changing that this year

Well I think he will lose the popular vote. It’s the electoral college I am worried about.

My buddy who lives in New England, told me yesterday that his family and anyone he speaks to, are voting for either RFK or Trump - they are all traditional liberals who voted for Biden in 2020.

He said their biggest gripe is inflation (cannolis cost $US9 apparently, up from $US4), wars and money sent overseas.

Antidotal data point obviously.

Edit: I had to check this out myself. Cost is $US7 last month. Was 5.50 a year ago and 3.50 6 years ago. I can see $9 on a different menu.

And Biden got more votes than Hilary who also got more votes than Trump.

Trump gets more voters out for both sides.

Graphs like that can indicate a revolution is on its way. The wealthy in western society need to give up a little to protect their wealth. Interestingly the Tea Party openly talked about this concept and called for higher minimum wages. They were generally a bunch of #_#&$s but at least they were open to debate.

He did, and in any other country’s electoral process it would mean he was never president.

Within U.S politics there seems to be an osmosis within voters which consistently pulls them towards the GOP, regardless of the quality of performance of senior officials from either side. Bush should have been stomped in 2004, for one example. Democrats are often criticized for not solving everything at once, as we have seen in older versions of this thread re Biden. They’re just held to a higher standard, fairly or unfairly.

By most tangible and objective metrics, while president, Trump moved away from his anti-establishment rhetoric which won him the 2016 election. He failed to address meaningfully any of the problems he highlighted on the campaign trail. However this lost him no voters, and won him even more. His performance in federal elections has defied all logic so far.

I have many criticisms of Biden and the DNC, none of which relate to his age, however within the framework of the U.S body politic he has performed well. The DNC have vastly more resources at their disposal than the RNC do at this point, thanks in part to Trump’s lawsuits. While this should result in a comfortable Biden win, the same was true in 2016 wrt Hilary. There’s simply no accounting for the DNC’s ability to shoot itself in the foot and then gnaw it’s own leg off.

While Trump’s own performances in front of the camera raise similar question about his mental state as what Biden has put up with since 2020, he is enigmatic and the media writ large have no idea how to handle him nor promote Biden’s accomplishments.

I find it difficult to be anything other than pessimistic.
