It’s just so arse-about that people will tell a nation that is dying in an attempt to defend itself that they should sue for peace cos how many more people have to die.
Do you think they don’t know that they are dying trying to defend their nation? This decision is theirs to make.
This idea that Trump is attempting to lead some sort of drum circle in an attempt at peace is bonkers.
I’d hate to think people want to see a compromised peace where Ukraine cedes territory just because their power bill went up….
There is still right & wrong tho. Putin & Trump carving up Ukraine between them with no security guarantee is pure evil. And as likely to lead to a sustained peace as sacrificing Czechoslovakia in 1938.
Times reporting today UK need to factor in the scenario whereby the U.S in future may hold back on Trident missile maintenance and cooperation. Not sure all can read this but here goes …
“Nicholas Drummond, a defence industry analyst, said he believed it was “extremely unlikely” Trump would cut off UK access to Trident missiles because it would be a “strategic betrayal on a grand scale that would damage him and America.” However, Drummond warned that Britain needed to plan for a scenario where Trump refused to give the UK the missiles for its nuclear deterrent.
“When it comes to support and maintenance, I would say that we are largely dependent on the US for parts and technical assistance. If this was withdrawn, it would also weaken our deterrent,” he said. “Can you imagine a situation where Britain’s relationship with America is fractured and they refuse to give us Trident missiles through the agreement that is in place? It would render the billions we have invested in Dreadnought (replacement class to the existing Vanguard subs) boats useless. A terrifying thought.”
“Anyone who suggested this a year ago would have been dismissed as an idiot. Now it is a scenario that we need to plan for.”
This and a coalition of the willing army/airforce to back Ukraine.
Better and more weapons - tick
A bigger army made up of third party countries - tick
Ultimately the Ukrainians don’t believe Putin will ever stick to any peace plan. I was bought up not to trust Russians or the Soviets. I would never trust anything Putin or the Russians agree to - unless there is a security guarantee from Europe and/or US.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine started in 2014 when Putin took Crimea. He didn’t stop there. Then he continued his invasion in 2022. Putin will not stop unless he sees serious military consequences of not stopping, or his economy completely collapses. Just giving Ukraine weapons without troops/support will not get us peace.
The problem is the West is too scared to do what is really necessary to really stop Putin.
It’s a reference to looking at the data from a distance ie high level as opposed to getting deep into the detail and doing a detailed analysis. We may of course be talking cross purposes
For a change of pace, and for a series absolutely no one asked for, here are some JFK phone calls that might entertain or intrigue.
First, a call between JFK and Eisenhower discussing the Cuban Missile Crisis:
And another—JFK getting frustrated over the purchase of furniture:
The guy on the other end of that phone call was General McHugh.
In a 1978 oral history interview, McHugh recounted that after Kennedy’s body was brought aboard Air Force One, he initially didn’t know Lyndon Johnson was on board.
Concerned about a possible conspiracy and at Jacqueline Kennedy’s urging—especially given the warm cabin—McHugh requested takeoff. When the plane remained grounded, pilot James Swindal told him Johnson hadn’t authorized departure.
McHugh found Johnson in a bathroom, reportedly hysterical, repeating, “They’re going to get us all. It’s a plot.”
This account was consistent with his 1978 testimony to the House Select Committee on Assassinations allegedly.
