US politics - The ICE epidemic (part 10)

Well he wasn’t too old, he was shafted by the Democrats’ capitalist establishment.

He’s not too far gone now - he’d do more good in one month than Trump has done bad in 1.5 administrations…

(I know he’s not going to run. I’m just saying he’s no Mitch “skin puppet” McDonnell)

According to Planet America, Trump says that if congress flips to Democrats, he will just block everything they legislate. I can’t think of a better reason to go for the impeachment hat trick, try him in the Senate push the 25th Amendment, and give all the Trump administration sycophants hell in senate hearings.

But you just know Trump will just try to make even more money out of his Presidency. Even if he does, I expect his spineless republican senators will vote to keep him in power, as long as he processes pardons for them during the last week of his presidency.

We can only hope that both houses go Democrat, to prevent Trump from getting some much younger Republican judges onto the SCOTUS. Imagine, Aileen Cannon, Supreme Court Justice! The problem is, he will have until January 2027 to pull a stunt like that. Thomas 78, Alito 76, being 2 who the Republicans would like to “refresh” Sotomayor at 72 might be given an offer she cannot refuse. The Heritage Foundation will be busy right now working on this exact plan.

It depends on the amount of seats the Dems are able to generate. If they can get a clear majority in the Congress AND the Senate they can do real damage to him and put real checks on him. But the Dems have to be disciplined. The last time they had a majority it was slim and Kirsten Sinema and the other dude (Joe Mansion?) were bought off and caused real damage to their legislative plans.

Its not possible to get a 2/3 majority of democrat senators, so a senate impeachment trial would hinge on republican defectors. Unlikely, but if the Republicans become convinced Vance will give them the best chance in 2028, they might force Trump out, giving Vance the advantage of incumbency. Unlikely, but the stink of Trump will linger for a long time.

Trump would veto anything congress did, however congress could effectively block Trump agenda also.
If one of the SCOTUS died, Trump couldn’t appoint another deep conservative, as an example.
I’d also expect that Hesgeth, Kennedy and Blanche would all be impeached.
Would they try to impeach Trump, even money I reckon.

He’ll be a lame duck but he wasn’t trying to legislate.

Congress is not passing much of anything anyway so further gridlock isn’t a change from the current dysfunction.

Their whole model of government is broken, and seems particularly vulnerable to the social media age.

Congress is not doing much because Trump has bypassed them. Everything being done is via executive order. He also ignores any attempt to reign him in. The Republicans ARE a party in name only. because it really is the Trump party. The model is broken because the guy at the top does not adhere to the rules and has no fear of being made adhere to the rules. The Dems have to show a willingness for the fight and block him at every step.

Sorry I should have used the sarcastica font referring to Bernie’s age at that election. Since that election both Biden and Trump weren’t too old to be elected, but both have shown that they were.

Congress is not also doing much because it’s hardly been sitting, because there’s a couple of R defectors there who have indicated their willingness to support dem demands for further Epstein file disclosures. Rather than risk that, the R head of congress has basically declared semi-permanent recess.

Due to Republican gerrymandering there’s a massive shortage of contested seats that promote moderate voting across the aisle. This should look like a bell curve, but the Rs have clearly gutted the central pillar into the R+10 to +20 bucket.

That some of those gerrymandered seats are in play is telling.

Congress is completely dysfunctional irrespective of whether Trump is the executive or not.

It will work a little better with someone else, but not how it should.

The Senate has held up better but the House is fubar’d.
