US politics - the new orange wave (Part 7)

So… Stephen Miller is going to separate young Latin American girls from their families so that Donald and Gaetz can rape them? MAGA!

If you’re wondering: no, it is unlikely a Democrat would get bye-election-voted-in as a replacement to Gaetz (he just won 64-36).

Senators (e.g. Rubio) generally get more rapidly replaced by the relevant State Governor. Will De Santis appoint a Trump devotee, or not?

There are lots of differing rules for these things, because these States are not United.

Which in itself is fairly horrifying.

The previous holder of the district got up to 80% support, if that makes you feel better…

Trump was particularly slow in sending nominations to the Senate the first time around. According to the Washington Post, three months into his first term, he’d put forward just 37 names for 530 senior-level jobs requiring Senate confirmation.

The slowness last time was mostly that he didn’t want to appoint anyone. It was a choice to leave the roles vacant.

Whether the resulting chaos was worth the wage savings on those roles can be debated.

It was also a definite Trump strategy last time round to appoint his people to positions in an interim or acting capacity, and then just never bother to make a nominee for someone to take on the role permanently. Just bypass the senate approvals process completely.

Dunno if it’s legally or constitutionally possible for all posts, but he’ll do it when he can.

For someone who presents as disengaging the US from regional conflicts and bringing peace, has he picked a bunch of warmongers to fill key Cabinet positions?

It’s aaaaalmost like he never had real opinions or principles about any issue at all other than his own self interest, and instead is populating his cabinet with toadies he knows will support him unquestioningly, hopelessly compromised slime balls he knows he can blackmail into obedience by holding an investigation over their heads, and/or people who Putin insists on.

Who’d have thunk it?

Matt Gaetz’s Democratic opponent thinks he will be good.

House Democrat Jared Moskowitz says Gaetz is very competent and will be a very powerful AG. From what I’ve seen/read he will definitely shake up the DOJ. Is this a good shake up or bad ? It’s what the American’s voted for.

The Americans voted for Trump and Vance. They didn’t vote for his Cabinet. There was no advance advice of the composition of his Cabinet.

Matt Gaetz’s republican colleague said that he was a paedophile.

I’m sure they’ve said a lot worse than that

Well no of course not. The Cabinet isn’t on the ballet. But by voting for Trump they afforded him the power and right to appoint his cabinet (which then must be affirmed by the Senate - the voters have handed the Reps majority in tjr Senate). If they didn’t want him (and the Reps in the Senate) to have that power they would have voted in Harris.

While that’s true, it’s also true of pretty much every incoming American administration. That’s just the US system.

I’m not so sure that that’s the glowing reference you’re making it out to be.

In Trump we Trust.
He pitched his foreign policy on bringing peace, then appoints Hawks

I don’t think he ever wanted peace but rather I think he just wants to pick the wars they fight in and the ones they offer assistance in.
US assets and money is spread too thin across various conflicts and I get the feeling he wants to pool it all to concentrate on the eventual inevitable skirmish with China

Trump is nowhere near smart enough to think like that.
