US Politics Thread - Post Mueller Edition

I still like the Chris Rock approach to gun violence…

Have all the guns you want, but make bullets $1K each…

I mean the kind of weapons that are restricted.

It may be the difference between 5 deaths and 50. I don’t mean to suggest that the 5 aren’t a tragic loss.

I think that number is about a 1-2 week (still crazily high) when you talk about shooting deaths. I think a lot of “in the line of duty” deaths are from other causes (e.g. motor accidents). So in the link below it was 19 deaths after 20 weeks, which was a third fewer than 2018.

That is crazily wrong.

You would think then that police would be the most vocal proponents of gun control for this reason alone.

AOC with foot in mouth again. I applaud her passion but she needs to be a little careful in what she says, her online post was poor. She deliberately chose those words and I wish she wouldn’t because, regardless of what “intellectuals” say about those words it evokes a clear link to something we all know about. And while she is right about the poor treatment of refugees, just as we have that problem here, using words that evoke certain thoughts diminishes her effectiveness and harms the Dems. The Dems need to be smarter about how they do things, evoking Hitler and Nazi Germany just feeds the Trump cause.

“The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border. And that is exactly what they are, I want to talk to people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘never again’ means something. The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalised practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing and we need to do something about it.”

“This is a crisis for ourselves. This is a crisis if America will remain America in its actual principles and values. Or if we are losing to an authoritarian and fascist presidency.”

“I don’t use those words lightly. I don’t use those words just to throw bombs. I use that word because that is what an administration that creates concentration camps is. A presidency that creates concentration camps is fascist, and it’s very difficult to say that.”

She pointed out some migrant children were being taken to the same facilities where people of Japanese ancestry were interned during World War II. However under Obama those same centres were used as well.

She probably calls them concentration camps because they are?

So are Nauru & Manus?

So people of one ethnic group were systematically sent to these places where they were starved and abused before a systematic attempt to kill them resulted in 6 million of them being murdered?

People need to get a reality check on the language they use. This plays into the hands of the Republicans and Trump about how the Dems behave and the words they use. They will use it against them and they will do it successfully.

Dems need to get smarter not dumber and AOC needs to be told to get smarter too.

I think you are referring to ‘extermination camps’ which is different to concentration camps. We’ve had concentration camps and internment camps here in Australia, it’s not just a Nazi thing.

Concentration Camps was a term used in the Boer War. Just because the Nazi’s had an extreme version of them doesn’t mean the term isn’t relevant to the US today.

I get your point, The Republicans are horrible spinless fvcks who will twist and turn anything to their advantage… but fvck that. It’s time these asssshats who lock up and separate young kids from their parents are held accountable and not AOC because she has used a term most commonly associated with only the worst atrocities and society can bring down upon another group of people.

IT, my grandfather was in a concentration camp at Cowra during WWII for being a German national. He came here to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

“The Stencil Man” by Gary Disher is a good read. It’s pretty amazing how a young outspoken non white woman is constantly called out for minor nonsense like this but Trump and co can call half the nation socialists and effectively alter the meaning of words blatantly, but it’s biz as usual.

Yes, which is why she criticised “The United States” (first three words in the second paragraph of your own post) and not any individual or party.

Yes I understand all that but the basic premise of using that statement always leads people to what the Nazi’s did. She used that phrase knowing full well where peoples minds would go, this is known because in followup posts she says that exact thing.

She used the term to make a point but my point it she is stupid for doing so because it feeds into Trump’s and the Republicans as well as ■■■■■■ off the Jewish groups who actually tend to vote Dems.

Not sure how hard that seems to be for you people to understand. Trump will use this against them and it is stupid to give him anything. Play smarter.

Just imagine how ■■■■■■ your head has to be to jump up and down about a senator who uses the correct term, and leave alone the President who tweets thanks to “The Prince of Whales”?
