There’s a certain aura, a glow with James Hird, like he brings his own camp-fire
Thats horrible news. 76 is young. Was he sick? He definately appeared in good health
All I can find is the he died “after a battle with illness”
No other details around at present (that I could find).
Got the mighty Cardies into the Prelim against Claremont in his first year of coaching in 1982. Injuries late would derail their seasons in ‘83 and ‘84 where they’d miss finals.
Was a successfull coach in the old Sunday League with four flags with two clubs in particular a three-peat at Maddington.
He and Bruce were the soundtrack of footy throughout the 90’s.
R.I.P. Denis
Dementia.
Was never a fan of his commentary or his style of humour
But it makes me feel old when one of the commentators of my youth has died
that sucks. my mum has dementia
Ablett, bartels to Corey … the cats are attacking in alphabetical order
salmon upstream to Sporn
Amongst my favourites
“Like a cork in the ocean”
on Karl Langdon when he got a flat top haircut
interesting haircut , nice lie for a 3 wood
Morris kicks a minor. It was a valiant attempt.
He also commentated on the radio with Alan mcgilvray which surprised me
The little pre-planned one liners were funny, but he was incredibly good at getting the very big moments exactly right.
His best was that Tom Hawkins final vs Hawthorn where the goal was kicked on the siren “the cat is still on the back”. Followed closely by the Tom Boyd goal in the Dogs GF “the stadium holds its breath”.
This for me sticks out as a great call and a great example of what is lacking in today’s commentary.
It superbly captured the moment and builds anticipation. Actually enhanced the play that was occurring.
Hamish or BT would just be screaming at the top of their lungs (amongst a whole load of over the top laughter and shotimuting) that it’s a goal even though it hadn’t even crossed the line yet and suck any anticipation out of it. You’d be there just questioning the call and what’s happening as the ball clearly hadn’t crossed the line.
I mean, BT’s radio call of that goal is somewhat iconic also.
Only because he said ■■■■. Which is… yeah…
Thank you for the reply and I completely agree.
BT and Brayshaw etc add nothing apart from yelling “unbelievable, it’s a goal, team x has hit the front” etc. Adds nothing. They should use the Richie Benaud rule - if you can’t add something to the moment then keep your mouth shut
That qtr was like a three day forecast in Sybria. 0 0 0
Dennis was, to appropriate a famous singers lyrics used by the NRL in a promotion, “Simply the best, better than all the rest”. Thankfully there are many, many recordings of his golden tonsils delivering impeccably timed comments that beautifully summed up the situation at hand. Condolences to his family and friends, the whole football world agrees that he is a massive loss. There will never be another like him.
RIP Dennis.
I loved the
“Cousins runs away from car and not for the first time.” line
I must be losing my marbles though as I heard that his last game of TV commentary was 10 years ago. Seems like just the other day
