The AFLPA aren’t a union, they’re a professional guild, they’re not going to dilute their money for state league players. When given the choice between pay and squad sizes in 2020, they kicked the lowest paid fringe players out of the league without blinking.
Feel like there’s a fair bit of misunderstanding going on with the VFL salary cap. AFL aligned clubs have smaller VFL caps because their AFL listed players don’t count against the VFL cap, and on any given week half or more of an AFL club’s VFL players are AFL listed, and if they had to recruit those guys they’d eat most of the cap room. A player the quality of a Nick Bryan for example would cost a VFL club a very big portion of their salary cap to recruit - but at Essendon that’s obviously not the case. AFL clubs aren’t disadvantaged compared to the rest - and it doesn’t stop them building a good VFL list.
I wasn’t suggesting it would.
I’m speaking holistically about the whole football landscape
How did Vigo go?
Didn’t do a hell of alot, but he moves well
Thanks for the clarification Paul.
Without divulging sensitive info…
What are we doing differently to other aligned VFL teams?
There’s been a clear change in philosophy for both VFL & VFLW programs.
I’d assume the easy answer is have a healthy injury list and your VFL team thrives, but there has to be more to it.
Is this wrong?
“ Midfielder Darcy Parish will not make the trip to Sydney, with a precautionary approach taken after the 26-year-old cited awareness following Wednesday’s main training.
Third-year midfielder Ben Hobbs will come into the 23 and Dylan Shiel has been included as an emergency”

Both can be true.
Wouldn’t be that crazy to only take over 2 of the emergencies rather than 3.
He was definitely out doing the warmup.
Shiel definitely still in Melb, he was seen in the Hangar during the VFL game
When it becomes the official second tier the salary’s will go up. Until then they might have to accept that there are other state comps that are of higher standard and who pay better
We have the same cap as all other AFL clubs do yet they all mostly run competent VFL programs. What’s to say a rise in the salary cap will help us?
Knowing us the other properly run clubs will get even better and we will stay the same
if we delisted Weid he probably gets another gig at the pies, there talls are horrendous.
They are, but I’m not sure even they’re that desperate.
Archie Roberts did very well for hist 1st game.
Was impressed with Archie. Plays with a bit of an edge which was great to see. Think we’ll see him at senior level sometime this year.
Still very slight but doesn’t seem intimidated.
Definitely showing great signs
AFL clubs should loan players out like soccer. Send our decent listed players over to the SANFL for a few months and we will look after them ![]()
Crameriesque
What was the final score?
Roberts clearly a step above every other player for mine, competed hard all day. Davey and Caddy both showed a bit from limited oppurtunities to show they’re AFL standard, with Davey’s goal pure excitement.
Slim picking elsewhere. Hayes did his best and battled hard, but just seems invisible to my eye. Lual seems a little hesistant to the ball and made a lot of mistakes by foot, has a long, long way to go disapointingly. Bryan was beaten by Darcy Fort and wasn’t a good day for him. Visentini got a couple of kicks down back which was basically it. Weideman was about as poor as you could of hoped, barely a disposal in the first half and look uninterested and soft when the side needed a leader, his career is stamped and done.
