That 50m penalty! How to take a close game and hand it to one team. The guy marked it and played on immediately. Sheahan appeared to go sideways to his left then sideways to his right as the Werribee guy plays on. What does the umpire see? Over the mark!! Questioned by Sheahan he says he didn’t see the play on. Good lord, what was he looking at?
A few minutes later, game on the line, Essendon behind, Stewart runs on his natural arc, after 2 steps the Werribee guy on the mark runs at him and smothers the ball. Play on. When exactly did the umpire call play on? About 2 steps before Stewart played on? That’s the only way it could have been not a 50m penalty.

The defensive running was non-existent. Werribee repeatedly got in behind our defense and outnumbered our last line.
Where were the half-backs (VFL listees) and mids (AFL listees)?
Merrett’s last kick was a deadset choke: panicked and stabbed it from thirty out. 100% not his usual action.
Losing 3 AFL-listed key defenders (and Ridley additionally being invisible) gave Werribee a chance if they got it, but again only if our team defence was awful. And it was.
Scored 102, and by far our worst game for the year.

From what I saw (last qtr) Werribee ran the ball at will, and hit up targets at will. They are either an incredibly fast skilful team, or we failed to defend.

Missing a bunch of defenders - Francis, Zerk, McNeice, really stuffed defensive teamwork.
On a positive every time I see Draper he’s getting better. Marking around the ground was good today - just got to keep working on his kicking. Ran out the game well. Not bad for a 19 year old ruck.
And I’d rookie Nino ahead of Hind.

Draper is great in the hitouts, but that rarely translates into much advantage in actual clearances. I see him get his hands on a lot of marks, and not quite hold them. A case in point was on the wing in the dying minutes today, when from the spill, Weribee rushed it forward for the winning goal. It would have been a very good mark, but the point is he did all the hard work to get to the right spot, balanced, and get a clear hold on the ball, and spilled it at the second attempt. In the end, he should have held it.
But, despite this, he is a very good young prospect.

Wasted in the VFL, should be developing his game in the 1s.

He got first opportunity and wasn’t delivering. Brown has come in and done so.
It is what it is.
Also this was versus a rubbish team today, it’s great he did well but its expected really.
As for where to develop, needed to work on things in his game, this is the point of VFL. Our senior side been travelling pretty well.
Huge game for 13 marks though. We didn’t replace a 3rd tall with Stringer out this week (yet) so maybe Stewart comes in
