I wonder whether the money and resources clubs need to pour into AFLW and VFLW programs has delayed the increase to list sizes and shift to a national reserves comp. Currently they mightn’t have the staff and coin to handle list sizes being 50+

Two sides will be filled exactly as they are now. Top ups from around the various amateur leagues and country comps.
Goldcoast had about 3 extra players on their list, which helped them have more players playing and training together. Gold Coast list of 46
Efc list of 43 Then take off a few injured guys or those who barely played - Davey, hunter etc.

The byes make absolutely no sense and drive me up the wall.
Especially when the AFL team is interstate and we could get good numbers to a VFL match, but no, they schedule us a bye that week

I think the ongoing injury debacle, particularly to talls, has made it hard for our VFL team over the years.
Impacted player development too.
Its often reduced the availability of listed players and meant we have had to use lots of small lightweight bodies.
Made it hard for continuity too.
I am sure there are other factors.
