MASSIVE performance from Layla Prince in her return to basketball!
The first triple double in PHX history
Triple double with steals, wowee.
Hopefully that defensive effort translates to footy too.
As a very-undersized ruck she has to do all of the extra things.
181cm Brunswick/Northern Knights, made the Vic Metro U18 team last year.
Her sister (Aava) has signed with Darebin. They either hate each other, or we already had too many full-forwards.
Q: Bella, tell us a bit about your football journey?
IHG: âI started playing in like 2021 during Year 8 which is during Covid. Trained a bit, and then played my first season in Year 8 and then did Knights Futures two years ago and then came back and trained with the 18s and played in the 18s last year.â
Q: Are you expecting more to play in the ruck or some other role this year?
IHG: âProbably more in the ruck this year. Iâve been training in the backline a little bit, but I think ruck will be my main role.â
Q: What strengths do you see in your game?
IHG: âMy aerial and ruck craft.â
Q: What about the improvements youâre looking to make?
IHG: âMaybe just ball use under pressure and just going up against stronger girls, using bodywork.â
Q: Which AFL/W club do you support?
IHG: âCarlton.â
Q: Is there any reason for that?
IHG: âJust my parents are big Carlton supporters, and grandparents as well.â
Q: Whoâs a player that you look up to or model your game on?
IHG: âSteph Wales, sheâs a really good ruck and versatile.â
Q: Whoâs had the most individual influence on your career?
IHG: âProbably my parents, my dad, just both of them supporting me.â
Q: What goals do you set for yourself this year?
IHG: âJust playing my best footy and enjoying the year.â
Phew, Chloe Hunt still exists (and may have the â#1â jumper). I was worried we might not have enough full-forwards.
Some players who want more than just Monday and Wednesday main sessions, winning the morning.
The not-core-leaders there being Verbrugge, Hishongwa-Gibb, Tyrrell, and Owens (maybe kind to the Loose Goose, who is only one year ahead of Tyrrell as a top-level U18 captain, but thatâs the vibe I get).
Bailey Hunt also present, dodged this photo.
Not a speedster, but that is some decent numbersâŚ
And detailed breakdown of a 38 disposal game below:
Lots of videos on Instagram by MaggieG (including Azzopardi being mic-ed up).
Oh yeah, and here is an actual training report!
Big camera present (not Maggie). But she is here on the phone and in a âmy mama donât like youâ shirt. Also multiple on-the-fulls from the pocket.
Approx 31 present. Amongst those absent were HartAluni (Darwin) and sFord (getting married next weekend). Also missing Gardiner-Dunn, Lambe, Robinson, and Orritt.
Lots of people on the sidelines, but with 8 weeks to go Iâm not too worried. That included:
- Bailey Hunt certainly limited leg-wise, but slowly escalated to laps.
- ChristinaBernardi did little but run laps and slot goals from every angle 30-40m out. I suspect she is doing exactly what she needs, and no more. If that gets us a couple extra years, is smart.
- Verbrugge started on light duties but was in the match play at the end. Ditto Tyrrell.
- McFarlane
- Thompson only ran laps, but did a lot of them and at high pace. Looks bigger/ stronger/faster⌠watch out!
- Albrecht only a bit less work on the sidelines; her reflective studs/bottom of boots are ridiculously mocking when sheâs sprinting away from someone slower.
- Prpic slowly working up to stronger sideways motions, and celebrating each one.
- Prince lots of running.
Some people in âcorrectâ numbers, but many not (including lots under 41). Some possible real numbers include:
- 41 Chloe Hunt
- 51 Hales (now I realise I didnât check what Ryan was wearingâŚ)
- Gilchrist 60 (not the borrowed 58 of last year; itâs been a long time since Prpic was un-injured)
- 64 Owen (Melnikas in #1)
- 70 Tyrrell â people actually still call Geelong Falcons âthe footy factoryâ
- 76 HishongwaGibb
- 80 Reynolds
Doesnât look like 10cm difference between HishongwaGibb and Owen. No surprise that HishongwaGibb is much more the agile athlete â and clean hands for a relative newbie â but Owen is mostly legs so when she gets up to speed can be pretty fast. Owen doesnât mind taking on opposition simply by being tall and keeping the ball waaaaay above the tackle. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnât.
Speaking of height differences, Owen and Mini occasionally matched up. Officially 46cm difference.
Drills included a structured multi-ball transition exercise between all four flanks (is a tight enough area to be pressured).
Vogt has a big voice and that extra bit of urgency. When her and Manfre (hand is now fine) drew the same side in one contested drill, they made the opposition look lame.
SammyJ kicked TWO goals (and no misses) running AT the goals! (not around the body, as seemed to be her only option last year)
SpringBrown is a decent range kick.
Matchplay, or something resembling it, started 80 minutes in. Hales and Froggy deep defence.
Ibrahim copped the fattest wing role youâve ever seen. And definitely didnât have sticky fingers tonight.
Quote Vogt: âwhatever it takesâ
Quote Melnikas: âI can get us in freeâ
For future reference:
Essendon VFLW 2026: Itâs (more) Full Forwards All The Way Down⌠or Itâs April Fools.
She sucked in quite a few initially, it seems.
Confirmation of Vogtâs number. Leadership group no surprises; Jayda graduates from the âemergingâ leadership role, with Tia DAMAGE and The Loose Goose replacing her.
Vogt is also identified as Midfield Development Coach.
Thatâs some good vibing!
Good to see Jacqui Vogts back at the club ![]()
She effectively took last year off with the big European trip (cost herself a premiership with Norf) but based on what I saw at training she is going to be a force. As a now-presumed mid is⌠interesting.
