VFLW - Round 10 vs Footscray @ Whitten Oval, 2PM Saturday 30 April 2022

Blame me for saying it at the time. Will check if stats are right upon watching replay!

Also, Iā€™d gladly rob Doonan of that second goal if it meant that kick from 53 out by Appleby had gone through Hird-v-Freo-final style!

Some thoughts from the replay:

What a bland first ten minutes (and it didnā€™t get much better). Dickerā€™s tackle at 10:00 is great, and then the brain fade by the Dogs to simply hand the ball away in front of goal in clear sight of the umpā€¦ gold.

Those two set shots by Tierney and CBombā€¦ yikes. No score from less than thirty out.

Barba greatly improved todayā€¦ but still meh.

Asciak a couple early dropped marksā€¦ but her second efforts after them were ferocious.

I know I already mentioned it, but Dicker beating three Dogs to set up the goal at the very end of the first quarter was fantastic.

We were unusually ā€œshort chip and markā€ early. Footscray were more aggressive than us; amazing they didnā€™t get one of those quick play-ons to end in a score.

I mentioned it once during a clearance, but at the time I didnā€™t appreciate how much Elarmaly played as a non-ruck mid, especially in a game where we were rotating the shorter-than-her Zanchetta/Doonan/Barba through full-forward. No rest for the Glorificus. Gratuitous experimentation against the cellar-dweller, or a longer-term plan?

Stupid question: in the absence of Clifford, and choosing to play Williams in defence, why did we bring in Appleby and not Manfre? Not exactly like-for-like.

Only 9 of 15 players got around Asciak after her goal.

It didnā€™t translate to the scoreboard, but with 16 disposals and a LOT of selfless actions, Frew worked hard.

The umps were comical (but consistent) when it came to ignoring almost every single tackle free today.

Iā€™m so sad the distant field ump over-rode our goal after the three-quarter-time siren. To dud the Dogs twice at that end on the siren would have been beautiful.

Morcom flailing her arms before she marks (or does most anything else) will always amuse me.

Apparently Courtney wasnā€™t in front enough to be paid this markā€¦

Their second point was approaching Dojiok levels of easy-stuffed-upā€¦

Is Nanscawen running out games? Where available (not round 1), quarterly disposals listed below.

Round Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 AVERAGE
2 13 13 2 2 7.5
3 5 6 3 7 5.3
6 10 5 8 5 7.0
7 5 6 7 2 5.0
8 11 7 6 4 7.0
9 7 4 7 7 6.3
10 7 12 6 4 7.3
AVERAGE 8.3 7.6 5.6 4.4 6.5

Round 2 I only had stats at half and full time, so divided by 2 for the quarterly results. If you remove that overt outlier, the averages are 7.5|6.7|6.2|4.8

(As a proxy for team quarter-by-quarter output, net scores by quarter are 136|153|115|179.)

Norf are destroying Fark Carlton 24-0 after 14 minutes. Their last goal of overlap run from the back line leading to a miraculous shot from hard in the pocket was epic.

Saints are struggling vs Willy (16-8 at half time).

The most important game of the weekend (Hawks v Casey) starts 45 minutes.

This may surprise you, but it seems the AFL have botched their sole stream for the weekā€¦ YOU HAD ONE JOB.

Up after missing the first 10 minutes.

Hawks 13 Casey 6

Ex-AFLW player Tamara Luke has kicked both of the Hawk goals.

Gillard playing, in defence.

Casey draw it back to 13-12

Gillard concedes mark to Luke. But she misses.

14-12

Hawks lead 14-13 at quarter time. Quality game.

Took 9 minutes for the first score. Pace and pressure is frenetic; wait to see if one team drops off.

Hawks 15-13

Stretcher out for a Hawk forward.

Right knee???

Was Zoe Barbakos. U18er, is/was a good chance to get on an AFLW list after her recent 3 goal game for VIC Metro.

Luke marking everything. They finally kick straight, and lead 3.5.23 over 2.1.13

And thatā€™s the halftime score.

81-39 disposals and 25-5 marks in the Hawksā€™ favour that quarter.

Well thenā€¦ go hawks

One of their few actual smalls, Humphries, has legit pace. Wins the race to goal and the Hawks suddenly lead 35-13.

Both teams have heaps of height, thatā€™s for sure

LOL Hawks. Player alone in their goal square, drops mark.

Her shorts are even browner now.

Dupe the above, almost. Easiest ever goals to not goal.

Stop thinking, ya nuffies.

37-13

38-13, 13 scores to 3.

Ball stuck at the Hawks end.
