FORM COMING IN

Both teams coincidentally lost by 39 points in Round 1 last week, with Essendon losing to Hawthorn and Melbourne Uni beaten by Geelong.

KEY QUESTION

How does Melbourne Uni compensate for the loss of its AFLW-listed players? Melbourne Uni’s list has been gutted as more AFLW clubs built affiliated VFLW sides to enter the competition this season. With 19 AFLW players on its 2017 roster, the Mugars only retained three this season. They will be buoyed by the retention of AFLW Best and Fairest Emma Kearney but will need to rely on experienced VFLW players such as Ash Riddell, Hannah Ibrahim and Elyce Hay to lead the club into a new era.

KEY STAT

Essendon will need to win more of the ball against the Mugars if it is to have any chance of controlling the outcome. The Dons only had two players in the top 10 possession-getters in its Round 1 loss to Hawthorn and trailed in overall disposals 166 to 224.

Following the MRP decision on Natanui, those big girls might need to weigh their options before tackling.

P.S. You may have noticed that the charge against our full-back Morecroft (a tackle/collision from behind) was quietly dropped.

Hmmm… perfect conditions bar the southerly breeze, and we’re more or less down to the rest of the squad plus families attending… Hird Stand is closed off, too.

We are kicking to the Tullamarine end.

100% of the frees paid in the first second went against us.

Gold and Hicks the only ones to stay forward as it stays down their end.

They have some advantage from the wind. We’re holding tough.

The real Bella Nichols with some early rebounds, is a decent kick.

Mackrill started centre, Moreau half-forward.

At least their names auto-complete.

No score 9 minutes in, which is a good thing given they have some wind and most of the ball.

Saving tackle twenty out gives us the free.

Moreau runs down their rebound twenty out!

For the first time ever, WE LEAD!

6-0 @ 12 minutes in

They intercept our rebound and thereby get a quick kick to an unattended Uni in the pocket.

6-6

Ball trapped down our end last few minutes.

Ugle on debut and getting a fair bit from the backline. Has vote-grabbing hair.

Damn. No vegan chips!

Tense last minute but we kill any chances.

1.0.6 ties 1.0.6 at quarter time

Wind is variable but perhaps 45 degrees our way this coming quarter.

First ten minutes were a big worry but we were the better team after that.
