VFLW - Round 3 vs FCFC @ The Hangar, 1pm Sat 8 April 2023

  • The first of their seven goals for the final quarter is “just” a series of little failures.
  • Dicker is not in the middle (swapped with Scott) and the setup is one-on-one.
  • I know I haven’t mentioned Doonan or Barba; both are just plugging away all day. And Doonan roves forward to snap our second (and final) goal.
  • Jacques currently forward; has had a “nothing” debut game with us. Her partner, Tayla Harris, was at this game.
  • Scott tries to take on her opponent after a mark for a second time. It fails again, she is lucky not to be pinged, and a goal results.
  • Jacques Molan Scott Cornish at the next centre throw-up. Cornish schooled in the ruck, but Scott and Barba (coming off half-back) fight back until Scott goes for another fend-off, and fails.
  • Kenny kills Bernardi via (innocent) slam tackle (let’s call it karma for earlier). She is way off her head on the green whistle when she comes off five minutes later. Multiple Bombers wish her good luck.
  • Scott is all over the play, even if it’s not all working.
  • Strahan was unlucky with the free leading to the next goal, but that doesn’t excuse her limp response, again.
  • FCer hands Dicker the ball, prompting her to ask “why do I get the free?”. Turns out the ump paid “insufficient attempt” against Dicker, and neither player agreed with that. Deadset rubbish, ump.
  • Doonan gives Molan an “Irish kiss” in the pack.
  • Some “interesting” umpiring of tackles in the final minute.

You really don’t see all of the loose players when not at the ground…

This looks painful, Tamsin, but it appears to have worked.

Very late coach comments on the AFLW players. Some dubious quality control in two aspects:

  1. Someone hasn’t told the coach and/or author that we cut Ryan.
  2. Busch did not “continue on and help maintain our rotations”.

Senior Coach Travis Cloke breaks down Essendon’s AFLW-listed players performances in round three of the VFLW.

Alana Barba

19 disposals, three tackles

‘Barbs’ had another solid game for us in the midfield. She was our equal-highest disposal-getter and provided good drive from contests and around the ground.

Joanne Doonan

17 disposals, five tackles, one goal

Joanne’s contested and uncontested possession game balance was a highlight. Her work around the ground resulted in her having a high impact and she was probably our best player on the ground.

Mia Busch

Three disposals, one tackle

Unfortunately Mia suffered an injury 30 seconds into the game which limited her output, so it was a brave performance by her to continue on and help maintain our rotations.

Megan Ryan

17 hitouts, 13 disposals, six tackles

Meg was undersized all day but did well to earn 17 hitouts and her season-high for possessions. It was another positive step forward for Meg.

Paige Scott

13 disposals, six tackles, one goal

It was great to have Paige for her first VFLW game this season. She showed promising signs with her final stats. The highlight for Paige was her impact around the contest highlighted by her six tackles. Part of adding to Paige’s game has been her defensive running, and she was able to add two rebound 50s which is a real bonus for her and us going forward.

Kodi Jacques

Eight disposals, eight tackles, five clearances

Her first game for the club was all about finding her feet and making her way into the game. She was very physical around the contest with her tackling ability a real highlight of her game.

Includes a better shot of Dicker pulling over the whole pack!

The AFL have released the first month of suspension data for the VFL/VFLW. That includes the below… it’s a shame the AFL didn’t ask FCFC to provide the medical report for the victim.

Isabelle Khoury – Carlton VFLW
The VFL Match Review Panel charged player Khoury for Misconduct during the first quarter of the VFLW Round 3 match between Essendon and Carlton on Saturday 8 April at the NEC Hangar.
As a first low-level offence, Khoury has been offered a reprimand.
Outcome – accepted a reprimand.
