VFLW - Round 3 vs FCFC @ The Hangar, 1pm Sat 8 April 2023

No considered entries into fifty = a bad day for a FF.

When she has/is near the footy, Spargo moves/looks like an accomplished footballer. It just happens so rarely.

Kenny is busy in backgrounds. Funny that Di Donato was our only ex-player I noticed, given she played just one game for us.

Also, what’s with the rubbish Windy Hill-style boundary line?!?

Barba also beats Hosking.

Yes, that is Kenny in the background.

SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENED.

Sophie Molan a rare shining light at CHB.

Nearly snuck two goals in, too.

Prpic’s official debut.

That looks painful, Manfre.

Intermittently there was light rain.

Davidge going nowhere.

FCFC’s loose player did more damage than Huta did.

Courtney is doing a good job as a defender this year. But we need her further up the ground as well.

Clifford and Bentley during pre-game warm-up.

Renee operating the muppet.

Barba takes zero ■■■■ from the opposition. And doing it with Courtney right there is even sillier, and Scott one of several others in a hurry to get involved.

Dicker with the headlock from behind basically deadlifts three people to the ground.

If you’re brave enough to watch the goals compilation from the same person, you will see Strahan again refusing to raise her arms while standing on a set shot mark and then flinching when the ball passes too close to her.

That’s poison.

Hawks easily beat the Saints, and sit on top only sullied by being unable to beat us.

The Cats, Collingwood, and Norf are the lucky recipients of two matches vs Darebin.

Quarter one

  • Right from the start, Kenny is on no one/no one is on her. No apparent pace/intensity in her, either.
  • Nice tackle by Tay on Di Donato as Busch is helped off before five minutes of the game has passed.
  • Fark Carlton playing funny buggers nominating two rucks vs Ryan at 10 minutes. Was done behind the ump’s back, presumably to confuse Ryan. It failed.
  • Ryan is very conscious of nominating. At a stoppage a minute later, there is no FCFC nomination. Ump don’t care.
  • Fark Carlton scored 3 times in the first 2 minutes. After that they never even got close, despite the ball never leaving their half in the following 13 minutes. Courtney very busy on the saves.
  • Ryan off at 14 minutes, Sargent takes the ruck. Why is Cornish in the team if not as negating fill-in ruck?
  • The last 18 minutes of this quarter is a literal nil-all draw. No indication of what will come, no free players or easy disposals.

Quarter two

  • Ryan is forward, Cornish is the starting ruck.
  • Whoever is on the far wing: neither of them come in before/for the next stoppage. Huta is on the near wing.
  • Lennox is still full-back on Sargent.
  • At 3:30 in we get our first waaaaaaaay too loose moment: someone streaming through the middle kicking long to two vs Crook.
  • Kenny a couple actual physical moments early this quarter.
  • The tackle by Dicker and tackle-shrugging by Tay vs Di Donato on the wing are excellent, and lead to our first goal. Spargo the entirely un-necessary push afterwards
  • Kenny and Tay are the wings at the next centre stoppage.
  • Klingbeil standing 20m free at CHF :rage: … Dicker was on her at the stoppage 20 seconds earlier, and got sucked up the ground >30m from her. Below you see Dicker and Ryan at the far left, and Klingbeil about to receive on the far right. FWIW, Jacques is on Klingbeil at the next bounce – not sure if there was a change in roles as Dicker is still in the middle as well.

  • Their Bernadi kicks out with her studs; a second brawl doesn’t quite break out.
  • As noted at the time, two successive chases by Ugle.
  • Shoot whoever is doing these not-quite-properly-sized-and-spaced graphics:

  • Presumably the fifty/goal was awarded for Courtney stepping a centimetre into the protected zone. The ump is an idiot who hates the game. Molan looking legit perplexed at what she could have personally had done to cop that fifty. A huge call with two minutes left in the first half.

Quarter three:

  • At some point late in the second quarter Ryan appears to have copped a whack on her left hand. She starts this quarter with it freshly strapped.
  • Dicker and Klingbeil start opposite rather than on each other. Once the ball went her way, that gave Klingbeil an unpressured clearance. And she totally botches the kick
  • The same distanced setup occurs at the next stoppage.
  • The red boxes are beveled, the white and black ones are not. Makes the bottoms look un-aligned. I’m probably the only person who consciously cares about this.

  • 2.5 minutes into the quarter, they’re over-the-topping-free everywhere. Luckily their last kick is an errant bomb and Bella marks it.
  • Molan doing some good proactive stuff, and getting out of position top concede the next goal.
  • Strahan half-heartedly waves right at the last moment of this goal, but this is absolutely her default “effort” while on the mark.

  • Ryan doing all the talking before the next centre throw-up.

image

  • LOL at their ruck Hurley completely flopping at a throw-up in our pocket vs Ryan… and rage at the ump for falling for it.
  • Molan gets a run on the ball, and immediately almost kicks a long goal.
  • Ryan celebrations are fun; this is after Molan is clotheslined… two Fark Carltoners push her for being demonstrative, and Meg pushes them back harder.

  • Surprisingly, her kick falls short, and sadly the ump refused to pay an obvious flop into her back just afterwards that would have been three shots on goal in two minutes.
  • If Molan can play the Ahrens role I’ll be very happy. Based on this game, she’s not as good in defence but certainly better on-ball.
  • Another brawl.
  • Courtney bobs up twice for inside fifties. The second hits up Ryan. Unfortunately Cornish runs past asking for it in not enough space, and her pressured kick misses.
  • Ryan forces a dropping of the ball, but the ump looks straight past her for a different free. Meg tosses her head back demonstratively.
  • Bella chips a 50m kick into/across the wind after marking on the last line.
  • 8-26 at the final break is bad, but not fourth-worst-of-all-time (score or effort-wise). That is yet to come…
