VFLW - Round 3 vs Hawks @ The Hangar, 11AM Saturday 13 March 2021

The commentary is sooooo familiar with/wanting a win for the Hawks.

Suffer.

will be able to sneak out for next weekā€™s game against Darrebin.

Canā€™t see them getting close if we play as we have the last few weeks.

3/4 is a dream start.

That is very true as a spectator, but as a supporter, it is all about winning for me.

Of course, that goes without saying.

The ladder, since there seems to be no up-to-date source for it

Casey has destroyed two teams, and been beaten by us. Contrarily, the Saints have only beaten us.

Fark Carlton beat Darebin today to get off the bottom of the ladder.

We play Darebin next weekā€¦

Those bests are pretty close, and absolutely correct on the BOG. That is the best game Iā€™ve seen Nattie play.

Since I donā€™t mention them much, Emma Mackay and Liz Hosking were solid today. Emma was like Caracella on the wing: she must stink, because no one went close to her.

I appreciated Barbaā€™s game more on the replay, but sheā€™s being a bit Shiel-y: youā€™re good enough to do massive damage, sometimes just gotta compose better and hit that target.

Crook backed up on her debut last week in defence. Sheā€™s very good at taking the ball on the run/from her toes despite being a beanpole.

Iā€™ve raved about Snell enough (she slowed down a tad in the second half). Ugle and Nanscawen lead by example, hard in the contests (for the ball, and notably by Ugle for her teammates ā€“ sheā€™s a tiny stick figure but wonā€™t let the team take crap from anyone).

Nalder just eased into the season by largely cancelling their monster ruck in Kate Dudley.

Nattieā€™s second goal (shame we donā€™t have Plays of the Week any more, or a more interested commentatorā€¦)

Below is an extraordinarily beautiful sequence: Nanscawen tackle, Ugle tackle, Nanscawen tackle, Heil feeds it out to Morcom who kicks long and Frew is on the sprint; takes it with one hand, lays that ball down sideways onto her boot, and slots it through the big sticks.

is Emma the left footer in 28? would probably be in the top 5 for kicking actions at the club from aflm down.

Yep, thatā€™s her.

I made my first trip to the VFLW today with Mrs AD_Don and our 4 year old LM AD_Don.

It was a really enjoyable day although it started out with a rookie error from yours truly by parking near the playground. So we missed the first quarter as LM AD_Don explored a new playground - totally worth the 40 minute drive at this stage.

After some serious negotiations the little boss agreed to leave the playground and we arrived in time for the second quarter. Turned out to be perfect timing as the bombers put on a clinic in the second term aided by what was a flukey wind generally favouring the western (?) end.

The standouts in that term were Barba who had the ball on a string, MacDonald who has such pace she doesnā€™t even need to dodge opponents she just runs around them, Clifford who was dangerous all day and Mackay who Hawthorn inexplicably left free to provide an outlet and link through the midfield all quarter. Hawthorn had no answer to our spread and we killed them in uncontested possession.

I canā€™t provide much comment on the third term as I spent it being used as a picnic rug and then being directed to run up and down the hill. The fourth term was dominated by Hawthorn as their bigger bodies started to control the contests. Thankfully the defence held pretty firm despite the tiredness of the team and their general inability to move the ball freely down the field.

The day finished with more playing at the playground (see earlier comment about negotiations with the little boss) and everyone was very pleased with the day.

Also massive shout out to whoever it was who crunched the number 11 for Hawthorn with a cracking hip and shoulder. It happened in the middle of the ground and I heard the thud from the hill.

Essendon has recorded back-to-back VFLW wins and its first at the NEC Hangar with a 28-point victory over Hawthorn on Saturday.

In humid conditions, the Bombers had a strong first half to set themselves up for an 8.7 (55) to 3.9 (27) win against the Hawks.

The Hawks hit the board in the early minutes of the game with the Bombers quickly replying with goals from Federica Frew and Mia-Rae Clifford.

The Bombers didnā€™t give their opponents any space in the second quarter, with the pressure resulting in four unanswered goals including two majors from Natalie MacDonald.

Debutant Elizabeth Snell, who came up from the Bendigo Pioneersā€™ under-18 side, showed her skills through midfield, providing solid support for Courtney Ugle and Georgia Nanscawen.

After heading into the main break with a 31-point lead, the Bombers extended their lead with an early third-quarter goal from Frew.

The Hawks lifted their intensity, however, locking the ball in their half for the majority of the third term, but were unable to capitalise against an Alex Morcom-led Bomber backline.

The Hawks dominated the play throughout the final term, managing to hit the scoreboard for multiple majors for the time since the opening quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Clifford was rewarded a free kick directly in front of goal, converting her third major to seal the win for Essendon.

Leadership group member Eloise Ashley-Cooper saw todayā€™s game as a ā€œstepping stone for the futureā€, with many younger team members stepping up.

ā€œIt was really a team effort. I think everyone played their role, but in particular Tamsin (Crook) was awesome down back and Snell (Elizabeth Snell) was phenomenal coming in for her first game,ā€ Ashley-Cooper said.

ā€œWeā€™ve been working towards our vision for a very long time, and I think we implemented some of the things we have been working on at training.ā€

As the team is young and continues to develop, Ashley-Cooper said the Bombersā€™ focus for the match was to continue establishing their own style of play and consistently implementing it.

ā€œToday we just wanted to play a brand of footy that we are proud of,ā€ she said.

ā€œWe have been working towards a vision for a very long time and I think we just wanted to implement what we have been working on at training.ā€

The 20-year-old felt the team was a lot more composed with the ball, but could see areas for improvement heading into the round four clash with Darebin.

ā€œI think we just stuck to our structures more and were more composed with the ball. We had clear intentions and played a selfless game of footy,ā€ Ashley-Cooper said.

ā€œThere were some times we didnā€™t achieve or play as we wanted but I think that is all in the learnings.ā€

The Bombers will hope to carry the momentum from their back-to-back wins into their round four clash against Darebin next Sunday from 10:30 am at the NEC Hangar.

AshleyCooper said ā€œlearningsā€.

Wash your mouth out with soap, young lady. Youā€™re better than that.

We didnā€™t use Mackay enough after half time even though she continued to make great position.

The Hawthorn ruck was enormous but was just jumped into (and over) all day and not allowed to influence the contest.
