VFLW - Round 6 vs Cats @ Deakin Uni, 1PM Sunday 27 Mar 2022 - Radio 3DJR exclusive

Belatedly, here’s the stats board at the break. Will we ever attend huddles again?

History of Ess-Geel:

14-59 (2018)
39-44 (2019)
16-39 (2021 H&A)
17-45 (2021 preliminary)
89-11 (2022)

North (next week!!!) and NT Thunder are the remaining teams with perfect records against us. North is a sample of one game – we did beat the linked Melb Uni previously.

(The Saints have now not beaten us every time, but we’ve never beaten them.)

Essendon now has a net positive score: 1806 leads 1778.

Federica claimed back the #1 spot for goals/game (1.55) from Tierney (1.5).

Joanne Doonan kicked her first goal for us.

Courtney Ugle kicked 2 goals for the first time.

I’m thrilled that Dani Marshall had such a great game, as her parents are in town!

They were meant to fly over in March 2020, but then a little thing called covid happened.

Very happy with this game. The query had been whether we were just picking on weaklings in that first month, and got brought back to earth upon facing the enigmatic Saints.

Geelong had us covered last year in the late H&A game and the second half of the preliminary final, despite us having some excellent NAB League top-ups available last year. From my point of view, they were the best team last year, despite three losses to the Pies.

They’ve been merely good this year, but the first four minutes of this game were trapped at their end and throughout the first quarter they looked largely as dangerous as we did.

And then… we destroyed them.

Nanscawen’s game upon return was fantastic. She had 10 disposals in the first quarter and ended as joint leader on 28 (extrapolate that to 42 for a 120-minute game). And she’s just more dangerous now, with greatly improved kicking. Happy and very much able to weave through traffic before making that more aggressive disposal.

Doonan stood out to me as the other improved mid. Lots of inside work. Her kicking can be good… there were fewer high chips in this game than previously.

I saw Zanchetta make a mistake! (dropped a mark)

Morcom told Featherston to go back to the AFLW (or at least the other end of the ground).

Marshall… just sign her to our AFLW team already. Is a step above. Hopefully she didn’t mind the relief rucking too much  – some deft taps in that little time, though. Should have kicked that goal in the first quarter…

Not much to say about the other defenders but obviously they did their job. Clarke never made me nervous while at full-back.

Davies is having an “almost” season. At some point it’ll click and she’ll kick a bag. Tierney a modest day – these two are very nice threats to have as nominal fourth and fifth forwards! 25 disposals and 0.4 between them.

CBomb had 13 disposals but geez, quality. Was timing her runs to the ball and marking contests immaculately, using all her nous to give her opponent no chance.

Frew didn’t do much other than kicking 4.2  – her opponents were multiple times strong and good enough to draw or win contests you might normally expect Fede to win.

Dicker got 19 disposals and 2 goals from limited time (was a rotating forward). Hasn’t got a midfield run since she dominated in round one doing that. Just needs to fix her occasional awful kicking (she likes to “do a Colyer”).

Speaking of which, Marianna Anthony. I don’t remember her having such a high proportion of total botch kicks last year. Gotta improve.

I’m still confused by Kendra’s socks.

Banana goal on the siren for Queen Fede.

Her goals took four years to arrive, and she’s going to enjoy them.

Doonan with just a hint of Irish green on the mouthguard.

Kicked the goal while being dumped!

The kick was at 20:07 on the screen clock.

However, the ball was raised and siren blown off to start the second quarter with the screen clock at 0:07(.5)

Unfortunately… they get to keep their goal.

P.S. Game starts at 16:43 into the video. Ends after 20:04 at 36:47. Break stretches to 43:38, so just under 7 minutes, which explains why I was annoyed 47 minutes had passed at that halftime siren. Geelong only broke from their huddle after we were almost all in place.

First quarter starts with the screen clock at 0:07.

Third quarter starts with the screen clock at 7.5 seconds.

I’d tell you what the clock said in the fourth quarter but the broadcast was still waiting to resume “shortly”.

Winners are grinners.

Headline doesn’t stuff around.

Article is just stats, though.

Essendon’s VFLW side has maintained its unbeaten start to the season with a commanding 78-point victory over Geelong at Deakin University on Sunday.

The seeds for the 13.11 (89) to 1.5 (11) win over last year’s grand finalists were sewn right from the outset, with Essendon dominating from the centre bounce, controlling the play and getting first use of the ball.

A half-time buffer of 28 points showcased Essendon’s ascendancy, despite Geelong managing to score a goal in the second term.

Geelong’s major in that quarter would be its only one for the game, however, as the Dons piled on eight unanswered goals to be dominant winners.

Captain Georgia Nanscawen showed why she was Essendon’s first AFLW signing with a prolific 28-disposal effort.

Jordan Zanchetta (26 disposals) and Amelia Radford (23) were also solid contributors.

Daniel Marshall and Cecilia McIntosh each finished with a game-high seven marks, while Federica Frew booted an outstanding four goals.

The win capped off a memorable afternoon for McIntosh and fellow milestone woman Kendra Heil , who played their 150th and 50th VFLW games respectively.

The Dons now sit second on the VFLW ladder and face North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval at 10:05am.
