VFLW - Round 6 vs Willy @ Willy, 2pm Sun 30 April 2023

Quarter two

  • Geez, Sophie got all her touches early.
  • It’s Nicole Julian who legally squashes Amber at 2:45. Copped the elbow of the hip and shoulder in the ribs.
  • Can you believe @Hoffy had never met/seen @PH_WARFRadio before today? They were sitting 5 metres from each other.
  • Great sequence starting 4:35. Ryan with the clearance, Wales getting a ground ball, Mia multiple efforts to get it to advantage, Bella picking Wilson out accurately by foot.
  • Willy squash Wilson, and Chaston takes on three Seagulls in remonstration.
  • Chaston in the next play at 6:15, with Courtney zipping past for the ball again.
  • van Loon just letting people bounce off her before getting the ball out at 7:15
  • Manfre gets to the contest a lot. Just doesn’t outright enough of them.
  • Grace gets our first goal at 8:20. You can rely on Dicker kicking under pressure
  • But as noted, Prpic is on the wing in this quarter at least. Davidge is more inside.
  • Doonan just keeps accumulating.
  • I love Dicker’s competitiveness. See 10:05 for a one-on-one win.
  • Crook another big mark down back at 13:50. Just quietly did her job today. her kick was a bit flaky though!
  • Class on the wing by Amber at 15:40
  • Not sure if we were wearing the armbands specifically for Killer (not Wales) today. Did he retire before 2018 (the VFLW first year) or at the end of that year?
  • Ump penalises a perfect defensive punch of a footy at 16:55. Get stuffed!
  • Good chase by van Loon to force the turnover just after that.
  • Go to 20:30 for Ryan getting murdered by the ump and demonstratively throwing the ball away. Funny as. Any ump who thinks Stepnell should win a ruck free (here, or generally) needs their head checked.
  • OK, I exaggerated at the time. The 50 was only 65, not 70.

Quarter three

  • From the half-time stat, I deduce Willy had 66 tackles in the last 40 minutes. Wowee.
  • We’re 2:30 into this quarter and I know the rest of the quarter produces just one more point…
  • Normally you can take on a stationary ruck and dodge around them. Not with Wales at 4:05… she’s dominated the last minute or so.
  • Nice elbow to Mia’s face by Pedersen (unco, not malicious). This is why you take the bloody shot at goal, Georgia!
  • Then again: Georgia takes the down-the-ground free from closer in, and kicks out on the full
  • We are having little Wilson deep forward and bombing it to her (this time vs two players) waaaaaay too often.
  • Good tackle by Mia sets up a Wilson mark (from a lead, not by standing and wrestling): falls just short.
  • Dicker’s speed used to good tackling advantage at 10:30
  • Ryan loves contact so much: effortlessly knocks Stepnell away at 12:10
  • She also loves little wins: this one for a tackle free she was involved in.

  • Dicker another great tackle, rewarded, at 13:20
  • This is a fantastic few minutes for our tackling: rundown by Bella at 13:55
  • LOL at Stepnell at 14:20 waving her arms as if to say “what do I have to do to stop being picked on by Ryan?”
  • At 15:40 Stepnell decides Ryan lying on the ground is a good opportunity for her to “accidentally” drop onto her. I doubt Meg blinked, and Spargo pulls Lori off.
  • Manfre earns the free 10 metres out, but the ump is conned into moving the mark two metres sideways to make it less than a perfect angle. Still no excuse for missing this. Holy ■■■■ that kick is awful… complete side-of-boot disaster. That was not worth waiting 14 minutes for.
  • Clarke AND Clarke are back at this point.

Quarter four

  • Julian obviously gets more than a few touches in the last quarter!

  • There are 8 stoppages in a row in our forward fifty early on. All of the rucking is done by Georgia Clarke, to no effect. Wales was standing just outside fifty waiting for the dump kick.
  • Clarke gets something more to her skills with a bullet kick from Chaston snatched out of the air. Just before 5 minutes into the last quarter, we lead.
  • Amber gets flattened again at 6:00. Ow.
  • Mia with the too-cute dab kick at 6:35, but followed up by her great tackle. Had opportunity/tried to dodge, should have been pinged.
  • Will may have beaten us on quantity of tackles, but we were QUALITY. Amber wins the ball forty out via one on Julian. I’m not sure I’m happy with Chaston just stopping and waiting for the ump to pay it, no matter how obvious it was. I did like her doing the fend-off, ‘cause why not, on the Willy player who came in.
  • Lovely pass by Amber to the leading Clarke. If you let Amber be composed, her kicking will destroy you (shut up; I know her poster is coming up).
  • Amber’s poster from 45 out, hard on the boundary, was still a pretty impressive kick.
  • Onya Kenny!
  • Wales is huge this quarter.
  • Onya Kenny!
  • I am annoyed the camera is set up to endlessly capture the Willy bench, but not ours.
  • In the last couple minutes Wales goes off and Ryan is back in the ruck… and girl, is she keen to contest and tackle. And then (literally) put her hand up to nominate for the next ruck contest.
  • Cameron says something to Bella at the boundary at 18:20. As they setup for the throw-in, look in the background for Bella chasing her down to “express a contrary opinion”. Luckily no ump was watching! Lovely Bella is so lovely :smiling_imp:

Kendra Heil kicked two goals for the third time in her EFC career – that jumped her past Lori Stepnell (11 vs 10) on our all-time goal-kicking ladder.

Dicker’s goal (#16) put her ahead of Monique DeMatteeeeeeeooooooooooo, and equal sixth overall with NatMac.

Gallivant photos yet to come (but here’s one of them early: GClarke and Crook).

Goal #1

Looking closer, Cameron actually gave Bella a jab in the side from behind as the ball went over. That’s why Bella is initially looking various ways for an ump to confirm that. Having not got that satisfaction, she dealt with it herself.

I always appreciate Clifford games more on the replay.

It was a particularly dynamic game for Ugle.

Good luck with taking Ryan down.

Julian falling into old habits and shepherding Ugle?

Well, maybe not. But admire her tatts.

Example of us treating Wilson as a seven-foot-tall FF.

Manfre collects…

… and is collected. Admire the tatts on the other side.

Finally, Dicker gets our first goal.

Chaston in quick to celebrate. Different tatts.

Even the ball can’t out-run Dicker.

Wales with one of her many wins not in the ruck.
