Yeah, I made it a mission to eventually have all the Beatles albums with great sound. It takes a tonne of research. Stereo or mono? Early press or later? New or secondhand? This country’s or that country’s pressings? This series or that series?
Of the ones I have I’ve paid a bit for some (never near Discogs levels) and not much at all for others, so it all really depends.
I never had an original or early press of this, so I bought the one you show a few years back. It’s excellent, Bob Weston did the mastering and lacquer cutting.
While I was waiting for a response I just read a whole heap about mastering and the guys who everyone raves about. I’m assuming my genetic hearing loss, plus’s too much loud music would probably mean I’m
Missing out on the good stuff they bring.
Yeah, 12" singles released on Virgin in the 80’s sounded superb (way, way better than the 7"s). Same with the EMI ones.
Whoever they used for their mastering/pressing really knew their stuff.
Even EMI LP’s sounded great. My original pressings of Talk Talk’s It’s My Life and Colour of Spring (both nearly 40 years old… gulp…) sound spectacular.
Just to show off a bit (OK, a lot…), these are all Virgin 12" or 10" singles…
12”s maybe not so much, but the LPs up to Big Express are everywhere and very affordable. Actually, I’d like a nice copy of Waxworks. If that sounds good on my system then I probably don’t need to chase singles.
