Matthew Whelan has joined the Bombers as Aboriginal Programs and Welfare Coordinator. This is a great decision by the club and I am sure he will fill a much needed role.
His work with other Aboriginal players when he was at Melbourne was fantastic. So rapt that he has come to our club!
Interesting choice, be very interested in benfti's take on this.
Would be interested to know the politics of appointing Matthew Whelan originally from Darwin, vs a local Aboriginal person, eg: NatRat. (good onya BSD for mentioning him while I was writing this).
Whelan sounds very qualified and I think will be a great asset. Are we likely to be able to combine a far north Aboriginal person in this role with a local one as well? It would be great if this would work, but I know this can be tricky, I would love it (no pun intended) if it could work.
I know there was a lot of politics between Michael Long and Jason Mifsud for example and they are an example of the potential for division between different Aboriginal groups.
We live in a big continent with a lot of different Aboriginal peoples who share a lot of history and similar cultural origins, but what has happened since the coming of the Europeans has played out in different ways over different periods of time, leading to differences between Aboriginal peoples.
I think Matthew Whelan is a great choice. He was the support person for the Aboriginal players at Melb when they were going through some tough times - I think he stayed there for a couple of years after he stopped playing. With Mark Neeld now an assistant coach at Ess, I am sure he would have put in a good word for him.

I would suggest, with all respect, people are people.
It's disrespectful to suggest they're relationship was purely political.
Some people get along, some don't.
Just think of Longy and what all our Aboriginal boys from NT, WA, QLD and Vic have said about a Tiwi bloke.
They're not all from the same clans, groups or mobs but they respect a good man when they see one.
Same will be afforded any bloke until proven otherwise i would guess,

Mifsud being a farking tool is not related to his regionality.
