Welcome to Essendon - there might be more last list spots…

I am more inclined to sit on the vacant list spots to wait for the mid-season draft - There will be a number of players who failed to play in Victoria in 2020 who will jump out of the ground.

As assistant coach I had a little bit to do with him in the NT U12s national side in 2014.

This kid has ‘it’.

The thing about NT footballers is they don’t get the same development as players elsewhere in the country. As an example In the u12s local comp in the NT we played on half grounds. Then we came to the state champs and we played on full grounds which none of the kids had ever done. Other states had been playing full grounds since U10s.

He was definitely marked at a young age and has applied himself well but he simply wouldn’t have got exposure to the level of coaching Vic kids do. I think with his application he could turn his kicking around. He has all the other attributes.

Yep, I wanted us to draft him.
Reckon he definitely can play a role

i am inclined to agree. We would have to receive significant injuries to require us to use SSP players. If we end up with lots of injuries then we might as well just play all the kids and prepare for 2022

Like a beaver?

wasn’t the talk pre draft that gold coast would prelist him due to having rights like they did to davies and jefferies etc.

maybe clubs thought Lake wasn’t available.
likely to be a later selection anyway.

we still should get some training at the club now, as we may not have pick 1 in the mid season draft. but will be easier to assess after they have played more footy.
so merit to keeping list spot open.

Has been cleared to play by more than one doctor.

He’s a mature tall forward, former number 1 pick who would play round 1 alongside Wright and Stewart.

Was an absolute gun as a junior.

Hard runner for a full forward, marks back with the flight, an actual good kick for goal, 100 kilo power forward.

I reckon this would be a very strategic action, to have a number of picks after some exposed form would be very handy.

Mccartins strength was he went 100% for the footy, no self preservation, that’s also his weakness. if he has to protect his head is he the same player.

those three wouldn’t all play together.
would be mccartin or Wright and Eyre or Jones with Stewart.

McCartin would need to transform himself into a Hawkins type of forward. potentially get bigger and stronger to protect his space / himself.

getting mccartin now we have Wright already and trying to develop jones and eyre probably not a good move.

could see pies taking a risk on him.

if you could guarantee he still has potential he did in 2016 every club would be lining up for him.

I think he’s worth the risk.

Worst case he’s off the list in the year and we get another kid.

He’s 100 kilo plus.

I get the concern about how he attacks the footy running back with the flight.

I also think surrounded by wright and Stewart who are big boys, he would be fine.

Put it this way, will be watching his season closely if he gets a shot at the swans.

Worth listening to Justin Koschitzke on the effects of concussions later on in life. With the information we’ve uncovered regarding CTE, it would be unfathomably irresponsible to take on McCartin in any playing capacity.

No, worst case is that he ends up with serious brain damage or worse.

Would you draft for Joel Selwood now for nothing?

Selwood is different, his head knocks are all from ducking.

I think you mean a gopher

The problem with this is, even if we’re crap and are bottom 4, we’d only get the (say) 4th and 22nd ranked players. There were still 50 kids taken in the draft, and clubs will take more via SPP selections. I don’t really think there will be 22 good kids out there in addition to what will have gone.

Wait until the mid-season draft for multiple picks and we’ll miss the boat.

Also, with the free spot, McQuillan’s spot and Mozzie’s LTI, we have 3 picks already. So we should be getting at least one player now.

if we got selwood, he would need to adjust his game as the free kicks would not be coming until the game is out of reach

And not sure he would be in our starting midfield rotation and not in age bracket for next flag tilt so wouldn’t even be in market for selwood.

ideal scenario would be to unearth someone like bulter or short…would cap off a brilliant offseason of list refresh.
