Next under the microscope in our AFL Draft watch is Murray Bushrangers prospect Charlie Byrne, a classy half-back or outside midfielder who is looking to follow in the footsteps of GWS draftee, Lachie Ash. Byrne was part of the Giants’ Academy before his transition to the Bushrangers program, but is set to run out for GWS as part of this year’s Academy Series.

In 2019, Byrne impressed throughout his 16 NAB League outings as an efficient forward runner from defence, who could also push up onto a wing or into the forwardline. His form was good enough to warrant a spot in the Allies squad, despite not cracking through for a berth in the Under 18 championships. As somewhat of a leader in his top-age campaign, Byrne had his sights set on making half-back his own at all levels, while also striving to shift into midfield.

Plus this summary:

Do we get priority access to the blokes training with us? Or are they available to anyone?

No priority access. Available to anyone.

But the players themselves also get a say

They can agree to be picked up or not by clubs. Not that most of these seemingly guys have multiple clubs vying for services.

IIRC may have been a player or two who went and trained with multiple clubs for them to get look at

If we want those training with us and they want to come then they are ours

Really?

Wouldn’t they take whatever opportunity is presented?
Last chance saloon situations don’t usually allow for contemplating offers!

Crauford was said to have contemplated - had multiple clubs keen on him and would have looked to get drafted on 2yr year after.

Was it worth him moving interstate for 1yr contract only on low rookie$?. In the end he did and it didn’t work out at all.

Other players don’t even put their hand up from state leaguers as far possibly moving interstate if there was interest. I think Aceman had Mitch Grigg that occurred with, against upheaval of his life and the work he already had going.

But yes in a general sense last chance should be just take whats on offer

Yes, I guess the point is if they get 2 offers they can choose, or if they get an offer from a club but are training with us, they could give us first right of refusal if they prefer their chances here, prefer Vic to another state, or any other reason. I guess just saying that it’s not like the draft where you get what you’re given.

Relevant so brought here (from the VFL thread):

I know this is all in reference to the VFL side, but you would think if he shines there we might use one of our 3 list spots on him, or at least invite him to train with the AFL team.

@the_don1, any thoughts on Jack Cardillo?

Clayton Oliver out of contract.

If we lose Merret and get a top 5 pick compo on trade that to Melbourne for Oliver we then still have our own top 5 pick to use at the draft

We will go after Dunkley again. We even signed his brother to our VFL side.

We haven’t given up on getting him yet.

Hope you are correct Dunks was disappointed that the trade fell through

They seem to be moving Heppell slowly to the HBF, which opens up a spot that would fit Dunkley perfectly. They signed his brother. I think Dunkley will get even less midfield time this year.

I am 100% sure we will go after him again.

Yep would even try for Bont if we cant get Dunkley.

Dodoro huge fan of the Bont wanted him in his draft year couldn’t get him due draft sanction.

I can’t see Bont leaving the Bulldogs. He is their captain.

I still believe Dunkley will end up at Essendon though.

Can anyone access and post this article on Charlie Byrne from just before the draft? Looks like an interesting read.
