Welcome to Essendon, Zachary Merrett

Apparently Thorold Merrett is still umpiring cricket out in the eastern suburbs....probably turf. Got to be 80'ish. My nephew reckons he's a pretty good umpire too.

Wow, that's quite amazing, bet he still milks the cows as well...

He look ZACHARY like his brother…

Boom boom!

I am excepted about this pick, has allot of tools that will transfer to AFL level, appears more ready than his brother with size but his tank may need some work.

Another addition to a growing group of classy young midfielders for the next generation.

Whereas I've always found EFC to be very inclusive. But seriously, heaps of promise in the mosquito brigade, seem to have drafted for smarts for the last few years which, if we can be a bit patient with the phys development might pay hefty dividends. Less thick bodies but also less thick heads.

Surprised no-one has yet suggested comparisons with ■■■■ Reynolds, Haydn Bunton, or even Leigh Matthews. Must be because they are too young to remember these players. No worries, Zach will set new standards.

I know because BB told me so.

Will be better than Thorald Merrett...boy will that ■■■■ Collingwood off....

Thorold too.

Oops, yep, I never payed too much attention to the filth,

Just looked him up , boy it would be annoy the pies if these boys have the ultimate success with us, here's a bit about their Great uncle...

He made his debut for Collingwood in 1950. At the age of 16 he was one of the youngest players in the VFL. Merrett played as a wingman and won respect for the accuracy and speed of his stab kick (which he had mastered on his farm as a kid by kicking stab passes through a suspended tyre). He became one of the best players in the competition despite his unusually small stature for a league footballer. In 1952, Merrett came equal sixth in the Brownlow Medal, and won All-Australian selection and a top three finish in the Copeland Trophy. A year later he again finished in the top 10 in the Brownlow Medal and celebrated the 1953 premiership with the Magpies, when he was one of the best players in the Grand Final.

In years that followed, Merrett performed consistently and he continued to be regarded as one of the best kicks in the league, as well as one of the best wingmen. He played in two losing Grand Finals in 1955 and 1956 (he had also played in the 1952 losing side). In 1958, Merrett changed roles to become a rover, and it succeeded. He won the club Best and Fairest and the Pies also won the 1958 flag, with Merrett named best on ground. In 1959, he again starred as a rover, winning a second consecutive Copeland Trophy, and finishing in the top 10 in the Brownlow Medal for a third time (he ended up with 77 career Brownlow votes).

A second broken leg in 1960 saw Merrett miss most of the season and, aged 26, he retired, feeling his best football was past. He played 180 games in 11 seasons and kicked 148 goals. He was also a dual Best and Fairest and premiership player, All-Australian, and Victorian representative on seven occasions. In 1997 he was included in the Collingwood Football Club Hall of Fame and Team of the Century, on the wing.

I read somewhere some time ago that they are also related on their mothers side to Alistair and Stewart Lord who played for Geelong. They were both premiership players and Alistair won a Brownlow.  Cant remember where I read it, so not sure how accurate.

and big rog.

Are you typing this in the dark Nocturnal?

I can confirm that the club told Trent Dumont that we would select him if he was there at 26. We told him we thought Port Adelaide were a chance to take him before us but if he slipped through we would take him. Hmmm... not sure how I feel about that. Probably happens a bit but a bit odd to guarantee and then not follow through with it.

Obviously they rate/rated Merrett higher. Simple.
Nothing more to it. At the end of the day they have to do what they think is best for the club and obviously they thought Merrett will be better for the club than Dumont.
I wanted us to draft Dumont but I am happy with the pick of Merrett. Both completely different players with different attributes.
I think the club opted for the skill and pace of Merrett rather than the contested ball winning and possession gathering of Dumont.
I for one am for it.

if dumont doesn't understand that any "guarantee" would be on the assumption we thought he'd be best available then he probably lacks a bit of "footy nouse".

realistically this "guarantee" was probably more of havin a chat about how he felt about the club.

Dumont's disappointment would have been short lived.

Happens a LOT. A LOT. Means basically nothing.

At least they didn't put it on the website a la Shaun Atley.

That was 100% intentional.

Yeah you're right Peeto. The guy that told me is part of Dumont's host family as of 2 days ago and they host 1st year North interstate recruits each year and he did say that all clubs loosely guarantee a lot of players they will take them. Sometimes guys that never get drafted at all hear such claims pre draft.

And the players would take it with a grain of salt anyway.  They know the drill.

I can also confirm that the Merrett boys are related to Sir Donald Bradman, Jessie Owens and Phar Lap*
*You know, six degrees of separation and all that stuff.

All of our players are related to Phar Lap after the horse drugs they took in 2012.

Merrett’s football bloodlines are strong.

His great uncle was Collingwood champion Thorold Merrett, who played in two premierships for the Magpies in the 1950s and was named on the wing in the club’s team of the century.

Jackson’s grandmother is cousins with twins Alastair and Stewart Lord, who played for Geelong in the 1960s, and his father Greg is a second cousin of Essendon dual premiership player Roger Merrett.

But, despite knowing he has a long way to go before reaching the heights of his football relatives, Merrett will be approaching his AFL opportunity with a focus on the basics.

He has already had hundreds of text messages of congratulations and friend requests on Facebook since being selected, but is more intent on gaining the respect of his teammates and coaches at Essendon than anything else.

““I’m going to go down there and build my body up and work as hard as I can until I get a game, whether that’s soon or down the track,”” he said.

““When I get down there to meet the guys hopefully I’ll be able to fit in with them and we can build a strong team in years to come.””

LOLZ.

Is there a secret draftee law that gives points if this phrase is published within a week of being drafted?
