Welcome to Essendon, Zachary Merrett

He reminds me of Simon Black/Daniel Rich with that lethal left foot ability of keeping the ball low and pinpointed.

Very happy with this pick

Dumont or Lobb if you believe other strangers in this forum. Sounds right.

Stoked.  Good genetics.  Skills we can use.

Surprised no-one has yet suggested comparisons with ■■■■ Reynolds, Haydn Bunton, or even Leigh Matthews. Must be because they are too young to remember these players. No worries, Zach will set new standards.

I know because BB told me so.

it's been ages since we drafted a champion of essendon. Why don't they just draft champions of essendon?

Ok so we picked up a cross between Sam Mitchell, Daniel Rich & Paul Chapman with the footy brain of James Hird?
Good at this draft caper we are.

You missed a few he's also Dane Swan, Darren Bewick and kicks like Jonathon Brown. Needs to go straight into the leadership group like Bryce Gibbs...

Will be better than Thorald Merrett...boy will that ■■■■ Collingwood off....

Thorold too.

Poor fella now has the massive load of expectation on him.

Probably will become much maligned…

Hope he doesn’t come last in a time trial.

Oops, yep, I never payed too much attention to the filth,

Just looked him up , boy it would be annoy the pies if these boys have the ultimate success with us, here's a bit about their Great uncle...

He made his debut for Collingwood in 1950. At the age of 16 he was one of the youngest players in the VFL. Merrett played as a wingman and won respect for the accuracy and speed of his stab kick (which he had mastered on his farm as a kid by kicking stab passes through a suspended tyre). He became one of the best players in the competition despite his unusually small stature for a league footballer. In 1952, Merrett came equal sixth in the Brownlow Medal, and won All-Australian selection and a top three finish in the Copeland Trophy. A year later he again finished in the top 10 in the Brownlow Medal and celebrated the 1953 premiership with the Magpies, when he was one of the best players in the Grand Final.

In years that followed, Merrett performed consistently and he continued to be regarded as one of the best kicks in the league, as well as one of the best wingmen. He played in two losing Grand Finals in 1955 and 1956 (he had also played in the 1952 losing side). In 1958, Merrett changed roles to become a rover, and it succeeded. He won the club Best and Fairest and the Pies also won the 1958 flag, with Merrett named best on ground. In 1959, he again starred as a rover, winning a second consecutive Copeland Trophy, and finishing in the top 10 in the Brownlow Medal for a third time (he ended up with 77 career Brownlow votes).

A second broken leg in 1960 saw Merrett miss most of the season and, aged 26, he retired, feeling his best football was past. He played 180 games in 11 seasons and kicked 148 goals. He was also a dual Best and Fairest and premiership player, All-Australian, and Victorian representative on seven occasions. In 1997 he was included in the Collingwood Football Club Hall of Fame and Team of the Century, on the wing.

Geez...
I don't know about the rest of you guys but I am so excited about our list at the moment.
Over the off-season we have really added some speed and class all over the ground with Aylett, Edwards, Z.Merrett and Fantasia.
But the best part is none of them are even sure to get a game next season! That is how good our 22 is and how deep.
All these exciting new players and they aren't even guarenteed senior football.
Really loving what EFC are doing and building towards at the moment. I haven't been this excited about what we are doing currently, for a long time.
This isn't even to mention the new facilities and Fujitsu sponsorship.

Great post......but please don't bring this place down by talking all positive and stuff!!!!!

I am sorry. Chapman is too old and injury prone, why didn't we take Dumont? etc.
Better?

His age doesn't stop him from being ef

Interesting to hear Dodoro say it caused the recruiters a dilemma when Merrett was available at 26. Wonder who they had in mind?

1. They didn't expect him to fall that far

2. They didn't expect Dumont and Lewis to fall either

A group of players became available they didn't anticipate would be there. I think that would be the dilemma, having to make a decision on the fly.

That for mine is the real issue.  If they were properly prepared they would have anticipated that scenario.  The final order wasn't that far off of the phantom drafts plastered over the net (with maybe Lewis the only exception, Dumont and Merrett were certainly in the frame at our pick).  'Decisions on the fly' are fairly dangerous...I thought we would have rated and ranked every player just in case they slid?

Zach looks a likely type. The one that surprised me was Fantasia. I honestly thought we needed to go tall, still do. Having said that, welcome to Fantasia and I hope he puts on 15 kg and tears it up.

Did you blokes watch the draft? Plenty of clubs took ages to make their picks. He'll St Kilda took a fair while over pick 19 and they had pick 18 so it's not like the one before was a surprise.
You have nfi why they took a while or what they were talking about.
And who gives a stuff, because it can't be changed now.

Apparently Thorold Merrett is still umpiring cricket out in the eastern suburbs....probably turf. Got to be 80'ish. My nephew reckons he's a pretty good umpire too.

So what would you prefer?
"Well, we thought Joe Bloggs is clearly the better player but because we thought he'd go 10 picks earlier we thought we'd stick with our original preference"
Things change, you make a decision.
As they did.
Really get the feeling Dodoro could land GAJ tomorrow and people would find a reason to criticise. They did when we got Goddard (too old, not a true midfielder, St K etc etc), when we got Heppell (we wanted Atley, they put a video of Atley on the website, Heppell is injured, not a midfielder etc etc)
Really feel for parents when I read some of it.
I can close the tab and ignore the childish whining.

Nobody said anything about how long it took to make the pick. We are talking about a quote from our own recruiting manager. Every team has their own reasons for taking time on particular picks. I'm not going to examine them all.

We care about discussing it and you don't. So don't discuss it and leave us alone. We don't need to know if you approve over discussion points.

We had 3 players fall into our laps who we didn't think would be available which is what I feel Dodoro is talking about with his quote.

You are correct. We obviously ranked Merret higher than 26 when the club put together their order from best to worst.

We took Merrett, I would have taken Taylor but we move on and hope the kid turns out.

It isn't a decision on the fly. Naturally when entering the draft you will get your information together and put the players in order from best to worse. Then when your pick is up you decide based on who is left.

We ranked Merrett, Dumont and Taylor higher than 26 and they slipped. So we took one of them, it isn't making a decision on the fly. What would be bad is to make a decision before the time comes and stick with that pick regardless of who falls.
