Yanks can definitely be a weird bunch, but at some things they are just organised. Bit like going to London for the first time and seeing how polite people are queuing for everything.
And then going to Italy where the queue for nothing, just mayhem.
Ever been on a plane in USA and they have overbooked ? Airline staff walking down aisle offering incentives to get off and wait, and the incentive is so large that half the plane are happy to oblige.
Was it always like this? I feel like a grumpy old, sky news loving boomer that screeches āIn my dayā¦ā and Iām not even 40.
In HK, if you stand on the wrong side of an escalator itās socially acceptable, even encouraged, to yell at someone. Sure, they get a mild fright, but they donāt often make the same mistake.
Nah ive never been to the States, interesting for sure the differences in behavior. Pushing 50 now ive learnt that the majority of the population just make up the numbers, so no point getting too wound up about it, the train has left the station.
Partly the reason why it is worse now, people donāt speak up, or if they do it usually escalates to an argument or even violence.
A Chinese culture is sooo much stronger than what ever culture we have adopted from around the world. The level of respect they give each other is so much different than here.
Edit and yes it annoys the ā ā ā ā out of me too!!
Chinese tourists are notorious for their bad manners. They will think nothing of pushing in, taking everything on offer etc.
I remember being at a HK theme park with the wife, and watching a performance in a crowd and three Chinese tourists squeezed through and stood in front of us. And then put up umbrellas for the sun entirely blocking our view.
Itās funnyā¦ when we toured China, our (Chinese) tour guides were forever imploring us to be on-time because āwe have to get there before the crickets arriveā. āCricketsā being their name for Koreans, who they regarded as being noisy, pushy, aggressive and generally obnoxious.
I have to say, personally Iāve found other nationalities (coughā¦ Russiansā¦ cough, cough) to be plenty more rude and obnoxious than the Chinese. Itās the Chinese spitting which I find most perturbing. Iāll never forget being lined-up behind a Chinese family waiting to get into the Terracotta Warriors in Xiāan. The queue was slowly progressing, to the point where weād at least progressed indoors. All of a sudden Grandma in front no less lets rip with a masive snort and hoicks onto the (carpeted) floor. I mean, COME ON! What in the actual fark???
When I lived in the UK (long while ago) for 6 months, no-one would be caught in the middle lane of a motorway if there was space to their left. And no-one would be caught in the right if there was space in the middle. No-one ever drove along at the same speed as cars to their left- they either sped up a bit to pass and get left, or slowed down a touch to drop in behind. Now-one blocked a car pulling left if it was clear they wanted to get out of the right/middle. Breaking those codes seemed to be regarded as a moral crime.
Those motorways ran WAAAAAY better than any freeways in Vic.
In some parts of Continental Europe, the law requires a motorist to pull over to the side if there are more than 3-4 vehicles behind you, in some cases, minimum speed rules apply to lanes.
I lived in HK for four years. By the end of my time there Iād seen some of the most flagrant rudeness ever. Locals love to be the first off the plane to the point where we used see people attempting to form a queue moments after landing. Another favourite was to punch the ācloseā button in the lift as you approached.
And another airport favourite of mine here in good old Australia are rude ones who push in to stand at the front of the baggage carousel and block access from the few hundred others also wanting their bag.
Left our house today for 90minutes and came back to a burst Flexi pipe that connects our water to the toilet cistern and flooded our main bedroom, ensuit, nursery (just set up ahead of child #3) and front living room.
The pipe must have just burst after we left as it was bad. The builder the insurance company sent explained that these pipes only have 5-7year life span and on top of that, insurance companies are phasing out covering these as they are notorious for bursting and builders are using better quality than what we had (entry level house and land package).
Hope they cover it as we are living in the back of the house and sleeping on a mattress in our dining room while big industrial heaters are blaring fown the front and a ton of furniture that will need to be replaced due to water damage
It happened twice at our house. The plumber said it was a common occurrence. Insurance company didnāt query it, but replacement carpets and cupboards took a while to get done.
I had a $500 excess and was obliged to pay the electricity bill for the industrial heaters ( HUGE) as part of the contract. Iāve had taps placed with the new flexi pipes. If it happens when youāre home, itās much faster than getting to the mains one in the garden and doesnāt cut off all water supply.
