Wheel of Time discussion thread (Books and TV show)

Tens of millions of individual viewers for at least the first few episodes, highest completion rates on Prime ever, and consistently ranking alongside stuff like Hawkeye/Arcane - I would say they’re not too fazed on what book fans are complaining about

Edit: also overtook GoT for most pirated show

The Halo series on Paramount will surpass the pirating record. I’m predicting a 99:1 pirate to subscriber rate.

Before the finale I would give the season a 6.5/7 out of 10.

I am equal parts hating and enjoying bits of it. That being said I think they have a great platform for later seasons to be amazing. I think covid absolutely wrecked the first season.

good luck!

also new spring after book 5.

I’m currently on my third re-read of the books, am on Book 6. Aiming to finish the entire series this time as I haven’t read Books 12-14 before. I’m estimating it’s going to take me 6-9 months as I don’t read that many pages a day.

But at least I should be done before Season 2 starts.

Wow. Books 12-14 are mind blowing.

You’re making me get all anticipated for that now

I found book 14 rather disappointing at first read…the anticipation of closure after so many years had me looking for something I didn’t find.

I’ve since gone back and read through the entire series twice more and enjoyed book 14 more each time.

What I find amazing is how many plot points and important concepts that Robert Jordan thought of right from the start. The amount of foreshadowing and sprinkling of hints that are there, especially in the first book, which only become quite obvious on re-reads. The first time you read them, it’s like unimportant details which you don’t really pay attention to.

Spoilers for the first book:

All the little hints about Rand being able to channel from when they first escape Edmond’s field, restoring his horse’s endurance, his arm shivering, his fever and then delirium on Domon’s ship, Four Kings, etc.

The final three books are Sanderson’s version of the finale. Heavily guided by Harriet and the notes of Jordan. Jordan wrote key pieces and Sanderson filled in the gaps. Understandably he didn’t quite land the voice of some of the characters in book 12, but Sanderson got into the groove by the end. I think he did as good a job as anyone could hope for in the circumstances, I think you’ll enjoy it when you get there.

To me what was most special was knowing the final chapter was 100% Jordan’s words. Part farewell to the series, part farewell to the author.

Also, I guarantee you won’t have picked up on it, but there’s foreshadowing of the final chapter somewhere in book 1. Which is bonkers level of pre-planning.

Hmmmm…

Some fantastic moments through that. Some things that didn’t quite land.

Definitely felt the absence of Mat. Perrin was doing a lot of the coverage there, but much of the weight of that scene was lost due to the missing relevant character.

The design of the conflict was better than the book. Each character had something to do, whereas the book just kinda parked everyone and left them as bystanders.

I liked the dynamic between Rand and his opponent. Undercut expectations perfectly. Interested to see where they take Moiraine from here.

The trolloc attack was severely impacted by covid. They weren’t allowed to use the practical costumes, so it forced a 100% CG battle in a time where VFX artists were doing wfh. It did the job considering.

I think I’ll rewatch the Egwene / Nynaeve scene. I liked that the women did the magical intervention instead of Rand. I liked that the failed Aes Sedai screwed up the circle so catastrophically, it showed the difference in skill between the real and the pretenders. But that healing at the end might have broken canon.

Perrin has been the weakest all season. He wasn’t helped by covering the absence of Mat. But the foundation of his character has been unstable from the start.

The prequel stuff was nicely done. It didn’t feel overly relevant to this episode, I think the tie in could have been done better throughout. It’ll be interesting to see how this gets handled through season 2.

For me it goes from bad to worse.

What happened to the eye of the world?

Sorry Benny, but the circle was crap. Happy they showed what can happen when channelling goes wrong, but they continue to make a mess of the story. I have never been big on canon, I always felt it got in the way, but staying true to the story is important. They have strayed so far so often that it is making a mess of the entire storyline. They have literally started where GoT finished. I truly hope they can bring it back on track with the Seanchan, but nothing I have seen so far give me confidence in their ability to do so.

Honestly, this should be labelled as “Loosely based on a story about the Wheel of Time and we will make up our own ■■■■ along the way to make every single self interest group happy because we want to be as woke as all ■■■■.” I’m surprised they haven’t made Loial gay at this point in time. Wonder how they get around Padan Fain killing him.

Honestly, right now it is a hot mess for anyone that read and enjoyed the books and was hoping they would do them justice. I hate to say it, but if this show was to slide into obscurity next season and be cancelled, I wouldn’t miss it in the least. I will watch it because I live in hope that they can pull their fingers out of their arses and get the show back to somewhat resembling the story.

He ain’t dead.

My issue is that Ogiers are fierce enemies, book 4 says to anger an Ogier is to bring a mountain on your head. As proof, Loial, an Ogier considered too young to leave the Stedding, holds off multiple fades and trollocs in the Stone of Tear when they invade, protecting children, yet can’t handle two and a peddler? This is the crap that annoys me. It didn’t have to be included and brings nothing to the tale, but takes a lot away. To what purpose?

And I agree, but no-one now knows that until the new season.

Indeed. This is absolutely what is happening with the show. Oh well, just have to either accept it and move on with watching the show, or give up on it. But it’s obviously going to deviate in significant ways.

I thought the episode was pretty good for the first half, until it got to the actual meat of the finale, then I don’t know what they were trying to achieve except perhaps to shock? It all felt very unfocused.

Yes, not happy with the healing of Nynaeve if it was a case of bringing her back from the dead. That is something which nobody except the Dark One is able to do. Sigh.

And what was supposed to have been done to Moiraine? Shielded? Stilled?
