Wim’s Occasional Guide to Melbourne Bars

Surely was going in early ‘90s

Dunno. Before my time.
I remember the last few months, everyone had already started going to NEXT

That’s Chloe’s bar, with the famous painting. Not a bad dining room there too.

It was. Also had the ANZ building incorporated into it.
Changed to Sofitel late 90’s.

I quite like the Croft Institute for a different type of bar.

I’m usually well into the night before I get there so my perception may be skewed though!

I was going regularly from at least as early as ‘96, but can’t remember if the rock night was always called Goo from the start, nor when it started.

It and DV8 were both going before I started going to clubs in 97. Tom who was running goo was an acquaintance and then Bronwyn who helped build destroy all lines out of goo and switch helped my band get a bunch of gigs at both venues over the years, from memory up until about 2007.

I reckon Goo started 95. Don’t think it was Goo in 94, although Geelong bitter was free for a couple of hours.

Seems as good a place as any.

What’s a couple of places worth taking a tourist for an after work drink in the city these days?

I mean…have you read the thread?

Yes.

Needs some more places added.

Croft institute looks like it’s closed permanently.

I think I’ll try Hells Kitchen, Americano then Rooftop.

Ahh, that is a bummer. Really liked that place.

Oh no!
If you want to impress then the Atrium.
If you want up class but casual then Madam Brussels.
If you’re looking for something more cough intimate, the Emerald Peacock.

Will have a look.

Probably going to avoid the casino.

If anyone hasn’t been to Naked for Satan / Upstairs is a great rooftop bar in Fitzroy. Couldn’t give it a review. Last time I was there, all the cocktail glasses had lipstick on them. Farkin grosse.

Also, anyone Northside who loves a classic dive bar, might like Cafe Gummo. They were playing Fugazi when I walked in, for some reason there’s a baseball bat hanging from the ceiling, live music some nights. LGBTI+ friendly, but fark all beers to choose from.

Yes!
More not CBD reviews please!

I reckon Cafe Gummo used to be an old techno/drum’n’bass club 15ish years ago from memory.

Bar ampere & gin palace with their communal garden hidden out back.

Whiskey and Alement.

Heartbreaker.

All within walking distance of each other. Bar ampere does a decent burger when most other places are shut too.

The Sherlock Holmes
Bottom End of Collins

A downstairs pub with a very vague English theme.
Upstairs next door is Dr Watson’s Bar which is light and airy and more modern.

Sometimes you just want a little pub for pres, and that’s what this is.
Not too noisy, but small-ish.
Very Sydney CBD style.

B-
Nothing special, but more than acceptable for what it is.

They do know to let a Guinness rest.
