Players to watch - VFL Semi-final
Jake Keating September 9, 2015 12:00 PM
(From left) Marcus Marigliani, Kyle Hardingham, Daniel Coghlan, James Polkinghorne, Daniel Willis.
Ahead of Saturday’s Semi-final against Footscray, we highlight some of the key players you might want to keep an eye on as the Bombers chase VFL finals success.
No. 47- Marcus Marigliani
Marigliani looked as though he hadn’t missed a beat when he played his first game in six weeks after overcoming a groin complaint. Playing a commanding role in the backline, the skipper impacted several contests to break opposition scoring chains and finished with 21 disposals for the afternoon. Look for him to stand up in defence yet again this weekend.
No. 48- Kyle Hardingham
Hardingham just keeps producing. After beginning the season in defence, the former AFL-listed Don has made a productive shift to attack booting 32 goals. Having the exceptional talent to play small or tall. Hardingham proves to be a difficult match-up for opposition defences. After another three valuable goals last weekend, Hardingham will again be a focal point in attack this Saturday.
No. 62- Daniel Coghlan
Coghlan has been the VFL Bombers’ most consistent midfielder all season. Another standout 28-disposal and one-goal performance in last weekend’s Elimination final solidified his dominance. Coghlan has the unique ability to both win the ball on the inside as well as be damaging on the outside. Adding to Coghlan’s trick bag is his knack to hit the scoreboard, booting 12 goals this season.
No. 50- James Polkinghorne
This guy does all the simple things well. Winning the contested ball, chasing and tackling hard, Polkinghorne ticks all the boxes as a midfielder most would want in their side. A workman-like 21 disposals, which included five tackles and a goal saw Polkinghorne named among the Bombers best last weekend. Keep an eye out for this guy to get busy again on Saturday.
No. 65- Daniel Willis
Playing throughout the forward line, Willis provides the side with a much-needed x-factor with his brilliant goal sense, speed and strong marking skills. He continues to go from strength-to-strength after cementing a spot in recent weeks. Willis played his best game for the year last weekend, impressing with two goals alongside a flashy 19 touches. Not hard to miss with his bright yellow boots, Willis should provide Bombers fans with some excitement this weekend.

I feel like this is a pretty dumb question, but what are the chances of the game selling out? If I roll in at 11:30 will I potentially miss out on getting in?
I’d say low chance, especially with it on TV, but being the only game that matters and the club sending multiple emails to 60,000 members about it… who knows?
Official capacity is 12,000 but I doubt that would be practical/safe. The greatest crowd since 2003 was a Port final when 6,000 were there.

Anyone know how many Windy Hill has held in recent times (e.g at an EDFL grand final?). The place was jam-packed for the post-Freo game in 2013 and the estimates I heard for that were 5,000-8,000.
EDIT: apparently the 2013 EDFL final was ~5000. Windy Hill has more grandstand space than Port.
Does Port Melb have good foooods?
The burgers are good. The pies are woeful - I couldn’t even eat the pie they sold me on Sunday … some local bakery I think. Geez what’s wrong with a 4n20? (don’t answer that).
I know a lot of people who haven’t been all season are all of a sudden going now. Only thing probably stopping people would be the 11.40am timeslot. When we win this week it’s the following week’s Preliminary Final where we’ll go close as it’s back to a 2.40pm start on Sunday (and school holidays). I’m not sure how many Footscray fans will get there for the VFL and then stick around the city for their AFL final. Makes for a long day especially for the older fan.
Vilis and Boscastle. There is no other choice.
Footscray’s possible optimistic naming of players, based on being listed at http://www.afl.com.au/news/injury-news/injury-listSo many General Sorenesses you’d think they were tanking last week.
Listed for AFL:
M Boyd (The General, test)
Morris (The General, test)
Murphy (The General, test)Listed for VFL:
Campbell (illness, test)
Hrovat (ankle, test)
Talia (ankle, test)
I saw in the paper today “Will Minson back” and immediately thought “Damn!!”
Then I realised they were talking about the AFL team. Happy to say that I’m completely VFL focused this week
VERY rough estimate, thanks to Nearmap volume tool.
Windy Hill 1466 sqm of main public stands, 3264 sqm of practical standing room
North Port 630 sqm of public stand, 3930 sqm of practical standing room.
Both have similar amounts of function room space overlooking the ground.
Too much info?
I’d say so… yes.
Just this once
pardon my ignorance, but who is fatarse?
Jacob “Fatso the FatArsed Wombat” Thompson.
Still don’t get it.
tl;dr version: the practical capacity of Port Melbourne Oval is probably around 6,000.
Jacob "Fatso the FatArsed Wombat" Thompson.
Id missed the Roy and hg reference till just then
Bit late, but club email yay!Reminded me Skipworth is back in charge…
Surprised that went through to the keeper. No meltdown? Blitz must have a hangover.
EFC going heavy with the build-up, two more articles today.
http://m.essendonfc.com.au/news/2015-09-11/the-burning-questions-ess-v-footsEssendon takes on Footscray tomorrow for a spot in the VFL Preliminary Final.
These are the burning questions.
What difference will the Bomber big guns make?
Essendon will welcome back some heavy artillery this weekend and it’s won’t just be on the field. Hayden Skipworth and Paul Corrigan will be in the coaches box after the AFL side’s season ended last weekend.
On the playing front, Shaun McKernan’s inclusion is significant. He was a dominant VFL player throughout the season and even led the J.J. Liston Medal count at the half way point of the year.
Orazio Fantasia will also be full of confidence after his impressive showing against Collingwood and Conor McKenna has been a handy goal kicker for the vfl side all season.
How good are the VFL listed players?
Just five AFL listed players took the field last weekend against Casey and such is the strength of the Bombers VFL list, the side was still able to get the win.
Midfielder Daniel Coghlan has been in a rich vein of form all-season and kicked a brilliant goal from 60 metres out on the boundary line last week.
Former Essendon AFL player Kyle Hardingham was recognised for his brilliant season with selection in the VFL Team of the Year. Former Brisbane Lion James Polkinghorne’s strong body has also been important throughout the season.
What does a successful year in the VFL actually mean?
A premiership for Footscray last year certainly provided a launching pad for the Western Bulldogs this season.
Paul Chapman said the VFL flag Geelong won in 2002 helped establish the great Cats era in the AFL that resulted in three premierships.
So while VFL Finals success doesn’t provide any guarentees, it can certainly play a key role in fast tracking the development of certain players.
Essendon beat St Kilda to win the Reserves Grand Final in 1999 and we all know what happened in 2000.
Essendon’s team from the 1999 Reserves Grand Final: Aaron Henneman, Daniel McAlister, Adam Ramanauskas, Mark McVeigh, Jason Johnson, Judd Lalich, Ben Doolan, Jordan Doering, Simon Eastaugh (capt), Ilija Grgic, Sean Denham, Matthew Banks, Chris Ladhams, Danny Jacobs, Ben Haynes, Stephen Milne, Shane Sheppard, Ben Collins, Andrew Dimattina
