Your first final

1989 Essendon Vs Hawthorn @ VFL Park.

I was 12 at the time. My 2 aunties took me (rest in peace both of them).

I remember thinking how cool it was the footy record was much bigger and the players pictures were in there, not just their names and numbers.

Vanders got taken out that day and we copped a royal beating..

Mine was one week earlier, 89 Qualifying Final v Geelong. Won by 78 points, them played them 2 weeks later and lost by 94 points.

1984 Grand Final

vs Richmond, 95  :(

ESSENDON V GEELONG 1965

2002 vs West Coast at Etihad and we won.... I think it was the week ■■■■ Reynolds passed.

Same as me. Remember being really pumped. Missing Hird, Lloyd got knocked out in a sickening clash of heads. Moorfcroft ,Barnard stood up. Great win. We should of beat Port the week after- but missed too many set shots.

Only ever been to 4 finals. Won 2 lost 2.

99 prelim.

99 prelim.

so it was your fault then :P

that sucks to be your first final

My first was the 1968 Second Semi v Carlton. We got beaten by about six goals after beating them twice during the season

Ken Fraser was captain and Jack Clarke was in his first year as coach after Coleman resigned after coaching the Bombers to two flags in 62 and 65.

The main reason I remember it so vividly was that there three generations of my family there, all mad Bombers supporters. My Grandfather, Dad and we children. I was 8  yhears at the time.

I am a little older now but I have added a fourth generation of Essendon supporters to the fold.

1983 Elimination Final

95 vs weagles at waverly

ESSENDON V GEELONG 1965

Yeh   Me too       Saw the whole finals series that year.    Was only 9 years old so I just remember it.

Elimination Final 1982. Essendon vs North Melbourne.

Waverley.

The margin was 13 points but we were never in it. North kicked away to a five goal lead at quarter time, and despite heavy scoring I don’t think we ever headed them.

We were on the fence and I could barely see over it, certainly couldn’t see over to the other side of the ground.

What stung more was that we beat Footscray 208 to 62 the week before, so my eleven year old heart was pretty, pretty confident.

I loved the lesser players at that age.

Justin Madden was still with us, Stephen Copping kicked 4, Wayne Otway, and I don’t think Budgie gets the respect he deserves either. He was a very, very good player, and at 166cm I was about the same height even then!

:o  that's insane! I was born in 86, so i love hearing about old Bombers games. Were Footscray really bad back then, or were we just starting to hit top gear?

Both.
They won the spoon that year, but we treated them particularly badly around that era (while the equally terrible St Kilda often gave us trouble).
Round One the same year we beat the Bulldogs 190-81.
Edit: And remember that the older finals are a final five or four.
We finished fourth of twelve teams that year.

Same game as Wim, the 82 Elim.

All the way out to Waverley for nothing.

About the only thing I remember about it was on the radio after the game they were saying it gave Phil Carman a chance to play his 100th game the next week for them. Well, that and having that same sense as Wim that we were never going to win it.

I also went to the Qualifying Final the next week, Hawthorn v North.

This red headed kid played his first game and kicked 5. Dermott Brereton.

1979 Elimination Final Ess vs Fitzroy at VFL Park. I went with my Dad that day, we lost and it was the first and last time I ever cried at the footy. I miss going to the footy with my Dad.

Same. 1979 Elimination Final at VFL Park. Safe to say I was over Elimination finals by 1983!

Truth be Known, I had big Maxy's 31 on my Bomber Jumper back in those days and I'm very happy seeeing his son running around with us now.
