1979 Elimination Final Ess vs Fitzroy at VFL Park. I went with my Dad that day, we lost and it was the first and last time I ever cried at the footy. I miss going to the footy with my Dad.
Same. 1979 Elimination Final at VFL Park. Safe to say I was over Elimination finals by 1983!
Truth be Known, I had big Maxy's 31 on my Bomber Jumper back in those days and I'm very happy seeeing his son running around with us now.
Yeah, I went from Ken Fletcher's 21 to Max's 31 around this time. Sleeves cut off with scissors. I remember buying the Don Smallgoods logo from a sports shop and sewing it on the jumper. Thought I looked the real deal. Good times.
First game ever was the 79 Elimination Final. 3 weeks before my 5th birthday.
Mum drove to VFL Park in the week before the game to buy tickets, and I was allowed out on the ground. I ran all the way out to the centre circle and stood on the plate they bounced the ball on in the centre of the ground. Was wearing my hand knitted bomber jumper.

Elimination Final vs St kIlda at Waverley. Can't remember if it was '74 or '75 but George Young kicked something like 7 goals and they beat us comfortably. Spent a lot of time looking at my shoes which was a favourite habit back then when we were losing.

Unfortunately the Bombers were belted by Fitzroy.
Took an hour to get out of the car park a nightmare of a day created by david mcmahon and bernie quinlan.
Td and simon madden played with broken hands.
Another nightmare occured 10 years later against geelong at vfl park in the prelim called gary ablett.
V Carlton 2011. Certinaly up there with one of the worst games I've ever attended. Hadn't been to any earlier because there was no way my father was going to take me to any Essendon finals (mostly for money purposes) around the time when we were good and I wasn't old enough to go the footy without adults.
1957 Grand Final. We played a very good Melbourne team. We surprised them in the 2nd Semi when we rammed home 9 goals to 1 in the second quarter after holding them (mainly due to their bad kicking) when they had the breeze in the first. Even then we only won by 16 points.
In the Grand Final, played in damp conditions that suited the heavier Melbourne, we had first use of a handy breeze but Barassi goaled within 13 seconds of the first bounce and we were four goals down at quarter time and never in it from then on. Final result a 61 point loss. Some top players retired after the game: Bill Hutchinson, ruckman John Gill and CHF Rob Fox with the result that we missed the finals (just) the next year but were back with a Baby Bombers outfit in 1959, going down again to Melbourne in the GF that year but really making them work for it on that occasion.
Took me a little while before I attended my first final.
1998 Elim Final v NM. Think Carey went nuts and won the game after we held them out for 3 quarters. Got rained on at the top of the Ponsford.
Was a fkn massive crowd too for an Elim final against norf, we filled the entire ground on our own that night.
Yeah remember that one. Thought it'd be over by quarter time. But we did ok considering how average we were that year.
Gee footy was bizarre in the 90s. Two one-point preliminary final losses in four years with a trip down to 14th on the ladder in between. Doubt you’ll see that again due to the cyclic nature these days.

RR, you have your years out of whack. We played the Saints in 72 and 73 at Waverley when Tuddy was our coach.
The ground had only opened in 1970 and the stand behind the terrace was not there. The Members stand was the only one built up but not to where it was completed sometime in the late 70's.
I hated that place. It was an hours drive from Essendon plus another hour stuck in the car park. I black banned that ground in 1989 after returning to the car, which I had parked in the Safeway warehouse next door to the car park. We had just been beaten by the Dawks in a game we could have won except for Antrobus' stupidity and Brereton cleaning up Vander. Got back to the car, flat tyre - no jack; dropped the thermos (my sister in law was with us) - smashed. Got home about 8:00 pm and swore never again will I go to that hole.
I only broke that blackban in 1992 to see TD and Simon Madden play their last games for the Dons. Tim Watson (retired at the time) joined them on lap of honour. It was the passing of the Old Guard. And then we won a Flag in 93 with a team of kids.

didn't we kick really accurately in that game. Had 7 goals straight before out first miss i think. Sheeds was pelted with Marshmellows after the game
My first final was the qualifying final against Carlton in 93, we lost by less than a kick. I wasn't too disappointed after the match and even my Carlton mates were saying it wasn't a great result for them so I was pretty confident after that one.
Then went to West Coast, Adelaide and the Granny... a truly superb month and one I'll never forget.
