Or you could have an actual number 1 pick like we did and blow it on a midget HBF’er
Or we could have left McGrath as a midfielder where he was progressing to be top level and not traded in Caldwell.
And it’s not like the 2016 top 10 is anything to write home about.
Not just our players, players from any team. Only a tiny percentage of players are as good as Tom Green at his age. So we should expect a similarly tiny percentage of our players to be that good.
Is it too much to expect Adrian to bring in elite talent talent more than once or twice every 10 years?
We always just happen to “miss” the good ones hey
It’s all just bad luck of course
We have none of them. You don’t see that as an issue?
FWIW I like Perkins but he isn’t a midfielder and we should be playing him as a top quality forward. Think he would shine there.
As an issue with Perkins? No. An issue with list management/fitness/the rest of the club? Definitely.
Based on your likely definition of elite, with the picks we’ve had then yes it is likely too much to ask.
So in all the years we have had top 10 picks we never got lucky with out and out elite players. Just bad luck really.
If McGrath was progressing to be an elite midfielder then Peter Wright was BOG last night.
Holy moly.
He was an academy pick. I do wonder I f he wasn’t tied to the giants academy, would he have been picked higher as clubs didn’t seem keen to force clubs to match bids early back then. He’s easily the best player from that draft (same draft as Rowell and Anderson).
As for Perkins, it’s his third season, first as a mid. He needs probably two more pre seasons to build his tank for midfield so he can have the same impact as he does forward. I believe it is worth giving him one more season as a mid.
Merlins Beard!!!
I know it’s unpopular opinion, but McGrath has definitely played his best games as a midfielder. He’s just the absolute last kind of player we need in there. A team that has bigger mids could use him to better effect than us. Maybe the Hawks.
Wasn’t Dodoro also considering Setterfield at number 1. So he probably needed three cracks at it to get it right.
When was this? I don’t remember him being moved out of the midfield for any other reason than he was underwhelming.
Yep, last interviews were McGrath, McAnlter and Setterfield. We should have gone Toranto, as he was the type we needed and I feel would excel anywhere, I actually think we would have screwed McAntler and he would have been a bust at EFC.
Here is a simple exercise. Go back and look at our picks, then the next five players drafted (ignoring academy and F/S picks). Then come back and list the elite players missed.
Of course m I do wonder how much was development and the saga. Heppell was an AA midfielder in his fourth season. How many mids in the last 20 years achieved that?
I know this will sound weird.
But, he looks small now. He looked bigger in his first season.
He also looks slow. It’s weird.
A lot of players do lose size during the season. They burn a heap of calories and there’s only so much energy you can dedicate to lifting weights.
Parker and Curnow , without looking.
