#16 Tayte Pears

Tayte looks good in heels?

2016 Tayte Pears retires a one club man ?

Pear's contact is essentially a one year insurance policy that Essendon has taken out in the unlikely event that 5 or 6 other defenders all succumb to injury.

More likely it was an insurance policy for the possibility that we missed out on the likes of Brown and Hartley.

Almost certainly gone at the end of 2016.

Not afraid to call it early. The majority of these guys are more than likely on their last contracts: Kommer, Pears, Cooney, Dempsey, Gwilt, Ambrose, Howlett, Ashby

I personally think people on this site have short memories. In his 2 games this year he averaged 16 disposals and 4.5 marks. In 2013 he played 11 games and averaged 17.6 disposals and 5.9 marks. As a KPD defender these are not bad at all.

However, keep going on about how cooked he is and how amazing it is he was extended when we’d just lost 2 KPD’s.

And?
The blokes he was lining up on averaged 22 touches, 9 marks, 6 I50s, 3 assists and 3 shots on goal.

There may or may not be reasons that I can’t see why you’d keep him, and he wouldn’t have been on those guys for the whole game - but he was soundly beaten both games he played this year.

Personally, if he’s going to make it back at all (and odds are stacked against), it’s as a rebounding 3rd tall defender. He just plays too loose too often.

Couldn’t agree more, “he just plays too loose too often.”
In both games, (i.e. 2 games) he was running away with the ball (that’s loose) for many many minutes (that’s often).

Great, what was he doing with the other 118 minutes of the game?

Cooney will be on the list in 2016 unless he plays < 6 games this year (which won’t happen). We didn’t trade for him to only get 2 yrs out of him.

those are good stats that contribute nothing to the conversation.

Sorry - He’s cooked and I have no idea why he’s still on the list. Does that work better for you? (I’m having an opposite day as my kids might say).

In 2015 Nick O’Brien played 9 games and averaged 21.7 disposals, 3.2 marks, 2.2 tackles, 3.2 clearances and 8.2 contested possessions. Does that work for you?

The stats mean nothing. That is my point.

Tayte obviously had significant injuries and has not been the same player since. When at his peak a few years ago he was contesting with the best forwards (and beating some of them), quick, taking marks and establishing himself as one of the young gun backman of the competition. His little forays into the side since have shown he cannot compete one on one like he once did which leaves him as a rebounding defender. That’s fine, but if so, he is competing to play on what - a half back flank? We have a lot of players lining up to play there whether it be some of our attacking types with flair, our young guns or apparently now our aging players like Zaka and Goddard because they want to be ‘playmakers’ (and Winders prior).

Tayte is depth and will start in the 2s. It will take injuries or stunning form for him to be considered. I have nothing against him and hope he can return to what he was as we need a good 3rd tall backman, but I’m not sure there is a spot for him.

I agree with all of them. its time to upgrade the holden.

Lets not forget that a few of those defenders might also have to be forwards too.

I disagree on pretty much all of them.

Kommer: Started well before getting injured. Still young, still plenty of upside.

Pears: Probably his last contract but if he can stay fit we know he can step in and play a role, and he might even have a good game and get some confidence. If Hooker or Hurley get injured (or are needed up forward) then Pears could become important and get plenty of game time, from then on it’s up to him to take his chances.

Cooney: Has a lot of talent and could certainly demand another year if he can stay on the park. They won’t delist him “because he is old”, if he is effective and fit he will remain.

Dempsey: New coach, new start. We have a lot of guys competing for those back flank positions and it remains to be seen whether he can play as a fwd or through the midfield. He should be considered a senior player now so if he can act and play like one he could keep playing for a few more years, otherwise he is gone.

Gwilt: Not sure where the hate is coming from as I thought he played well when he was given the opportunity, can certainly fill a role. Can’t see them getting rid of Dempsey AND Pears AND Gwilt.

Ambrose: I’m a big fan of his but it’s hard to fit him into the side. Hird & Bomber seemed to rate him though, and Worsfold is big on fitness and physical presence where Ambrose excels, so if they can teach him a few tricks while our skinny forwards are still developing I think he will stay on the list.

Howlett: Howlett offers a lot and we I think we will have a very good midfield if we can do without him. Probably depends on Buddha and Myers staying fit and whether Zerret and the younger brigade can help with the hard stuff.

Ashby: Has only had a handful of games but you would expect him to get more opportunities this year. Not too fussed one way or another but do we have a system that we trust will develop players over 2-3 years or do we just expect to get ready made players like Zerret & Heppel? And if we expect to delist guys after a year or 2 anyway then we may as well keep guys like Pears, Gwilt & Howlett as they are at least a known quantity who will train hard (and provide good training match ups) and can fill a role.

Dalgleish would have been a better option for rebounding HBF so I cant see that being the reason we kept him. Defs a insurance policy as you state at the end

Packed his bag!

Oh …uummm, … is that an artisanal leather good?

That is probably one of the worst outfits I’ve ever seen.

Was surprised to see he got a one year contract extension. Was less surprised that it was just an outdated thread title.

Could have gone 2x blue denim. It’s back in you know?

That’s a leather bag stuffed with cold, hard cash.

Too smart to go stepping on the Skippers toes like that …
