This thread will be a much more bite-sized effort, as I’ll only be listing the top 20 worst wins since 2000.
I’m still drafting my final list, so I thought I’d start the thread early and see which wins come to mind when Blitzers think of the club’s “worst wins”. It’s the anecdotes that make these threads fun after all.
This may seem strange as this game made it to Number 2 on the list of 50 best wins since 2000 but I’m going to put it out there that this was also one of our worst wins as (imo) it was the beginning of the end.
The Comeback Win versus North Melbourne, Rd 16, 2001.
It truly was a magnificent win…but we were never as good after that game.
I think it is more the “ugly wins” where you walk away thinking that we are just so bad.
Like the games against West Coast and I think North Melbourne in 2023? We beat both teams by less than a kick but both of those teams were complete junk and we were aiming for finals.
It the crap where the coach says “you need to win ugly sometimes, shows the team can fight” when really, it just shows how ■■■■ we actually are.
I agree with you about it being one of the worst wins. I disagree with you about it being the beginning of the end. The end began on Grand Final night 2000. Markers along the way included a dismal pre-season where we lost 3 matches out of 4 and a loss to a not very good Carlton in round 3.
Good shout. They were getting pumped by 120+ for a few weeks beforehand, and this game was win-and-in for us. Should have been a perfunctory home victory.
Instead we needed to come back from 6 goals down to win. It was a sign of things to come vs Fark Carlton a week later.
