I’m not sure another tall HBF is really the best use of our list spot. If he was a genuine small defender maybe, but even in the neafl last year he was a high possession HBF similar to Heppell current role.
Mids and small forwards are the biggest hole in our list at the moment, anyone we bring in will be reliant on injuries to get any gametime in the seniors even with our depth being wiped out atm
Well we certainly need defensive depth in that medium player type - we have very few options there as coverage. Can he play on smaller types? We need that moreso.
If it’s Baker and we’ve had him in our VFL system already he would be ready made to step up if required.
Had 27 possessions vs Frankston last game so can def find the footy.
Do we?
It sounds like he plays the same role as Francis/Ridley, surely if one was injured we could push Lav into that role and play another “pure” tall.
Its really the cover for Redman/Hind/Heppell that we don’t have, beyond Hird (maybe, in 2022). Its why we tried to convert Cahill. Baker is really only a viable option if he can play this role.
Redman is looking unbelievably good across HB and in fine form. After an average year last year why on earth would we want to mess with that right now and put him in an unfamiliar position?
Ham is serviceable.
you need an endurance machine to run the wing, plus have pace.
Leave redman at half back, push forward and get his hell boy goal a week.
Another bolter in the mix, Kolar’s raw athleticism and speed-endurance mix had him pegged for big things at this year’s draft. Adelaide was said to be the major club of interest, so he may be snapped up quickly among the rookie intake given the Crows boast pick one and are impartial to a Knights talent. He debuted late in last year’s NAB League season and showed off some nice versatility, but really shone during this preseason to put himself in contention.
What he offers: Athleticism The knock: Rawness
LIAM KOLAR
Clubs: Northern Knights/Vic Metro
Position: Utility
Size: 195cm/81kg
Bio: Clubs certainly have plenty of interest in the 18-year-old who has turned all of his attention from soccer to AFL. The ceiling for Kolar is high and he could well end up as a top-30 selection come draft night. He has tested strongly in the endurance and speed categories in recent seasons, showing he can play as a key tall at either end or even end up on a wing. He averaged 5.5 marks in the NAB League last season.
