I’m not convinced that he could translate his SANFL form to anything like that in the AFL.
I think Hill has far more upside than Stengle

Close yes. Narkle is a mid. Rohan isn’t a small forward.
So Close and Miers (Dal is cooked).
That’s pretty average.

Please…Close okay but the rest are not small forwards. Hardly stacked for small forwards since Dahlhaus is cooked and Miers is ordinary.
Yeah. I get both sides on this.
I think we give too much weight to what draft pick a player was taken with. Like Francis was taken with pick 6, Harris Andrews was pick 61.
To me the choice is:
- Hill + draft very late pick
- Stengle and whatever early pick we don’t give up.
There’s always a cost with trading. Be it salary or losing picks. When you have two options, you need to be convinced that the performance of the expensive option offsets what you lose.

I’m used to getting a player or two through draft week.
Hope we do land one of these boys.
I think they would need to change the way they move the ball in order for a small forward to have the best chance of success in goal kicking terms.
But they can still be valuable in other ways.
Maybe its easier to not look at it as binary, like an either/or scenario. As a few others have mentioned this seems a bit smoke and mirrorsy - so perhaps we have always been after Hill, and we would have taken both. In that case its only - ‘Is Hill worth a second rounder?’ My opinion is yes.
But I don’t disagree with the logic. Every decision has an opportunity cost. Its just what gets you the closest to competing for a flag I guess.

Is Hill better than the Gold Coast small forward we were looking at? I hope we’re still able to improve our draft position like we wanted.

Played a lot more footy, was a higher pick and played most of the year for a team higher on the ladder than us. Hill is older though.
