I put this together last year and have just updated it now…
Current Board
The Essendon board is made up of up to 10 seats with a maximum of 6 elected positions and 4 appointed positions. Terms are basically 3 years - elected positions commence at the end of the AGM upon which they’re elected, through to three AGMs later. Appointed positions can last a bit longer as they begin from the date the director is appointed, through to the first AGM after their 3 year term is up.
A director cannot be nominated/elected/appointed if they have already served 12 years at the point that their new term would begin. Appointed directors cannot start a new appointed term if they have already served 6 years in an appointed position - they can run for an elected position at the next AGM when their term expires.
If an elected director resigns before their term expires a casual vacancy is created and the board can appoint a replacement to see out the existing term. This replacement is considered an elected member, not an appointed member.

Kevin Sheedy
Appointed as a casual vacancy in October 2020 to Katie Lio’s elected position. Re-elected at contested 2020 AGM. Term expires 2023.
Tim Roberts
Appointed in 2022 to fill the casual vacancy created by Sean Wellman’s resignation. Term expires 2023.
Melissa Green
Appointed in 2017 to an appointed seat created by Chris Heffernan’s departure. Changed to an elected seat at 2021 AGM (unopposed). Term expires 2024.
Dean Rioli
Appointed in 2022 to fill the casual vacancy created by Paul Brasher’s resignation. Term expires 2024.
Andrew Muir
Joined board in 2015, elected unopposed 2016 & 2019. Re-elected at contested 2022 AGM. Term expires 2025.
Andrew Welsh
Appointed in 2022 to fill the casual vacancy created by Simon Madden’s resignation. Re-elected at contested 2022 AGM. Term expires 2025.

Dave Barham
Elected to board at contested 2015 AGM. Moved into appointed position that was created after Lindsay Tanner (who had been appointed) took up an elected position at the 2018 AGM. Re-appointed in 2021. Term expires in 2024, after which Barham will need to move to an elected seat due to 6-year term limit for appointed positions.
Dorothy Hisgrove
Appointed in August 2021 to fill casual vacancy created by Lindsay Tanner’s retirement. Presumably took an appointed position in 2021 when Melissa Green changed from appointed to elected. Term expires 2024 and can be renewed without election for another 3-year term.
Kate O’Sullivan
Appointed in August 2019 following Ken Lay’s resignation. Presumably renewed in 2022. Term expires 2025 after which O’Sullivan will need to move to an elected seat to remain on the board, due to 6-year term limit for appointed positions.
David Wills
Appointed in 2022 following Peter Allen’s resignation. Term expires 2025 and can be renewed without election for another 3-year term.

I think where I got confused last time, when an elected member resigns. Then the appointed member finishes the term with the status of an elected member.
As to Lindsay Tanner, I recall there was a swifty pulled to give him the elected status.
Something like advertising a vacancy , after a couple of days, he is the only candidate , .
Yeah, when I first heard about casual vacancies they confused me but I now get why they exist. For the most part I’m not in the camp of keeping the spot vacant until the next AGM, but I don’t support the gaming of them which has been happening at times to give members less of a say.
Re: circumstances around Tanner’s election - I’ve just had a look into it. It seems the club adopted new election rules in September 2018. I don’t know if they had additional rules beyond what was set out in the constitution prior, but the constitution at the time (2011 version) only allowed for nominations to be made via a nomination book at the club. The September 2018 rules allowed for nominations to also be emailed in, as well as stating notice of AGM and nomination form must be published on the club website 60 days prior to AGM.
I’ve found an archived version of that page published 60 days prior but if that was the first time that process was in place, I assume most people did not know where to find it and instead first became aware that nominations were open when the club published a statement on their main page 3 days before closing.
So they followed the rules but it certainly sounds like a case of a new process being poorly communicated.

He has always been out unofficial spokesperson and was in a paid role for several years. But nothing positive was listed.
He’s an old fool. Time to move on.

Over the last 8 years I’d say his public support during the Saga was significant.
Returning to the club in 2015 important given the instability at the time too.
He’s the club representative and driver for charities we support like Foodbank, initiatives around the country game etc - enough to be named a Victorian of the year for his work.

Why should he be moved on?
How has he performed against other Board members, including those who have been there longer, the ones who took decisions on the coaching staff and other key positions?
Moved on because he put his own ego before the club and spat the dummy when it didn’t go his way. There. ■■■■ off sheedy.

Sheedy will always be a club legend, but being a board member requires quite a different skill set and temperament.
It says alot about the club’s decision making that it felt the need to appoint him as a board member. Almost like it needed a sugar hit at the time.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the club has now arranged for Sheedy to “retire” the year after his re-election so that they can use the casual vacancy to replace him with a corporate suit who wouldn’t be well received by members.

We have done some appointments for the look - Tanner, Ken Lay for instance after the Saga.
There is something to be said for Board members who have a passionate identification with the Club, Rioli for one.
Not everyone needs to have the skills of a corporate suit.
