Thanks for highlighting. Not sure how I crossed him off.
Issac Smith has retired.
I’ll have to go through and check the lists against Dunlops list.
Edit…
Have checked and the players that are crossed off and bold aren’t in Dunlop’s list. If anyone finds any other anomalies with the list, just let me know.
Haven’t had much of a chance to do much through the weekend.
Draft thread has been updated to reflect team names on AFL Fantasy and included the final two rounds.
I’m waiting on Neela (Awesome Scotty) to join the AFL Fantasy league.
He’s having troubles getting onto BomberBlitz so he’ll get on eventually.
Full disclosure that this clarification is coming from a self interest perspective but may be relevant to other coaches as well.
Based on the draft thread and the expansion to 12 rounds it now looks as though anyone that entered the draft with a pick deficit inside the ten rounds from midseason trades will now pay a significant pick penalty for the rounds to make up the remainder of their squad if the replacement picks are now after round 12?
I only have 8 picks inside first 10 rounds and now will have 10 selections by pick 215, where I assume traded out picks will then be selected? Any pick traded midseason in deficit has now effectively had an additional pick traded alongside it if the replacement selection becomes round 13 and 14.
Did we have stats on how many LTIs were carried each season, I’d be surprised if it was over 30 at any given point?
Good point. There’s usually 10~ extra LTI’s taken at the time that the draft is held.
I’m lythe to just scrap the last two rounds because it’ll just make it tougher to have a full squad by round 1. And the first FAs usually isn’t until prior to round 2.
It’s just a long wait given there won’t be a proper injury list until round 1 for the majority of teams.
But I do take your point. It may be better to just stop at round 10 and let FAs handle the last two spots on the list. Worst case, if the draft does end with enough time, I can hold an FA prior to round 1 commencing to help teams fill their squad leading up to round 1.
I also have no problems processing FAs every week on the night before the first game of the round. This gives everyone a chance to look through team selections and gives them more opportunity to have 18 scorers every round.
What does everyone else think?
scrap the last two rounds of the draft.
process first FA prior to round 1.
process FAs on the night before the first game of the round.
Can you run the draft as per normal for 10 rounds - so everyone has 30 players by pick 180 as usual, with pick deficit clubs filling their rosters late - and then run a straight reverse ladder Rounds 11 and 12, a bit like the real life rookie draft?
It’s a good idea.
I’m not sure what I can do with the draft until Neela joins the league.
I’m not sure if AFL Fantasy will allow 32 player lists with 2 less rounds of draft. It may not let me change the list size from 30 to 32 once the draft has started.
Worst case, we may just run everything after round 10 on Blitz.
Anyone you trade in during this trade period must make your keepers list. So trade wisely.
Another previous rule is you can’t on-trade players once you acquire them. You have to actually do a three coach trade to do that.
You can on-trade draft picks all you like though.
Thanks Blummers, my preference would be to scrap the last two rounds and go in with 30. I don’t think that there are positive outcomes that come from an extra 36 players off the board, the FA pool will be permanently diluted throughout the season and I think we may have more instances of teams short if there is an additional hoarding of talent on lists by those fortunate enough to not get struck down by injury.
If anything teams with injuries in their 30 will have to be more creative around their lists, which will either promote more in season trading or more rotation of squads through FA, which I think can only be good things with more list turnover opportunities.
In the other league I didn’t make an FA change last year with a 30 team squad (in part due to Bench being terrible), an extra two picks would have seen even less of a need to use it.
A further thought to the above, with the additional change in structure there is also the risk that more players in certain positions go in the first however many rounds, teams that are short in positions due to the structure changes may not have players to pick when entering the draft, creating more avenues for zeros.
I agree with this. We’ll have more instances of teams playing short with a weaker free agency market.
Also, if we hold free agency after team selection, the handful of players that are available through free agency will get selected by the bottom few teams, and the top eight teams may as well not participate in free agency.
If the objective is to minimise the instances of teams playing short, I’d keep teams at 30 (even without a LTI list), and keep free agency before team selection.
I tend to agree. More players in squads will increase the number of donuts. This situation will likely shine in a rebuilding team who take plenty of kids and hope they get a game. Then come fre agency the pool may be nearly bare.
I have to agree with the previous comments, I’m not the biggest fan on expanding lists to 32. I’d prefer to keep it to 30 as it will have diabolical consquences on the FA.
Plus in season, I’m not sure how the thinking of a bottom team would be to prefer to draft two plodding 40 averaging spuds on their list over just drafting two more prospects that you think could get a game further down the line.
It seems suitable to reduce lists back down to 30 and LTI’s need to be included within the list. That means rounds 11 & 12 are no longer required at all.
There will be an FA held on the night prior to round 1.
This gives every coach the opportunity to be able to field a full 18 for round 1.
Please note, given we are going down this path, every coach needs to manage the injuries accordingly to be able to field 18 per week. We’ll be monitoring those teams that do take on a donut to see if they are attempting to at least field a full 18 weekly.
Choose your prospects who aren’t getting senior games wisely.
Another thing I’ve noticed…
I don’t think there is a restriction on the number of changes (we used to have 30) on AFL Fantasy and we certainly have no interest in tracking it through the season, so unless a setting pops up later on, you are free to make as many FA changes through the season.
Another avenue that could be considered in future seasons is to open up more trading periods through the season to allow teams another opportunity to improve their lists.
