David King on SEN…said he’d love to play under Hep. Said he’d never seen a captain in pre-season put the time into every player on the list. Said that what we have this years is built on the experienced players, Hep, Hooksy and the midfield. Might be useful for Blitzers to recall this next time Hep has a clanger. Or Hooksy looks slow chasing some bloke
PS I am no acolyte of King, but he’s had a good look at us
Have to admit, whilst I haven’t been a vocal critic of Hepp I was pretty concerned about his move to HB. I thought it would expose his weaknesses and ignore his strengths. Shows what I know.
This guy is tough as nails. Stands under high balls and is very selfless these days. This is the biggest thing that is changing at the club. There is less hero worship just do your job don’t worry about the accolades outside. That is why guys like Guelfi and Snelling get games - they are jobbers who just get on with and do their job. It’s why Richmond and Geelong have succeeded because they play a system.
That mark in the last or 2nd really high ball and Hep stood under it. No-one came into to hit him and looked a simple mark when you watch a replay but that isn’t an easy make because you don’t know what is coming. That type of commitment to the ball is what leading as captain is about.
Lloyd on AFL.com spoke glowingly about Hep.
I hope he keeps it up for the rest of the year. I think he is really setting a standard internally for the first time in many years and for the first time it isn’t our star player who is captain and doing it on his own like Hirdy or Jobe. Hep is trying to leave this club in a much better place before he finishes up. Same with Chookn I reckon probably Hurls and Zach at least I hope so
I tried to squeeze him into the Nobby votes, and on another day l probably would have. His courage has never been in doubt. What l liked most about his game was his vision, followed by his execution. He spotted up the open player and he hit them time and again. He controlled the back half of the ground like a chess grandmaster. He is moving with much more freedom as well, so kudos to the medical staff for getting him fit after the last couple of seasons were cruelly effected by serious foot injuries.
I’ll put my hand up and say I really doubted the move of Heppell to half back. Not because I’m a hater - I actually quite like Dyson Heppell, and think how good he was has been too easily forgotten - but because I thought half back would highlight his two biggest weaknesses; his pace and his sometimes suspect kicking. I also felt that physically, he was close to done.
Very happy to be looking completely wrong at this stage, and he’s also looking like he’s moving better each game he gets into his legs.
The fact that we lost Saad and McKenna at the same time, but still have ended up with a more effective half back line, is a real credit to this coaching panel.
